cannondale dating
I recently purchased a cannondale criterium series bike that is supposedly an 86, but a friend of mine(who knows more about bikes than me) says it has to be newer than that. Is there any way I can date it with the serial number on the bike? It has an 8spd rear end if that helps anything. Thanks

I was going to suggest cutting it in half and counting the rings, but I guess you got it some other way...

I'd suspect it's a few years older than 87. I used to have an 86, and it was equipped with a 6 speed freewheel. In addition, at that time (86), I believe that Cannondale had only one type of road geometry, rather than specifying road vs. crit geometry.
Does it have the cantilevered rear drop outs? If so, it would look like the chain stays extend out an inch or so beyond where the seat stays meet the chain stays. If it does have that design, it might be very late 80s or early 90s. My 91 Cannondale had that type of dropout design.

I figured it out by getting the model number off the crankset and going to weightweenies.com and looked up what year it was offered. I searched for a way to look up the serial number on the bike to date it but I had no luck. Here is the bike: https://www.villagephotos.com/pubbrow...der_id=1283683
