Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Your Weekend Cycling/Sports Report - March 28/29

Where did you ride this weekend? Have you got spring-like photos for us ... or autumn photos? Who did you ride with? How far did you go?

Saturday -- we're getting ready to go!

Hopefully it doesn't get too slippery for you.

Saturday -- Rowan and I drove into Hobart, and then cycled out to the Tasmanian Health and Fitness Expo.

On the one hand, I expected what was there.

On the other hand, I hoped that there would be more "natural" exercise. It was all indoor stuff. Fitness equipment of various sorts. Nothing wrong with that, and I used to be involved in bodybuilding back in the day. But I can see how that can be intimidating to people wanting to get into an active lifestyle. I had hoped that organisations like the Hobart Walking Club and Bicycle Tasmania might be there. Get people active in a less intimidating environment.

I also hoped for more about eating a healthy diet ... but all there seemed to be were display after display about juicing and smoothie blends and supplements.

So we left, just a bit disappointed, and kept cycling. The cycling was really good ... a beautiful day. The weather site says the high was only 17, but I saw one of those signs that shows the time and temperature and it said 21. It felt reasonably warm to me. And we had sunshine!! All up ... 41.84 km.

The track beside the cycleway ... that part of the track is no longer used.

Well, today isn't quite as sunny and lovely as yesterday ... there's a misty rain going on. But we're still thinking of donning the rain gear and going for a bit of a ride.

I loved visiting Glenelg. We were there over one Easter/Anzac week a few years ago. Beautiful area.

Sunday -- Rowan and I drove to 7 Mile Beach and cycled a loop around that area, with a few extra bits while we explored where this road and that road went. It's nice ... fairly quiet, very flat ...

It had been raining quite a bit before we went, but eased back to an on-and-off drizzle with the occasionally heavier bit while we were riding. The temp reached 17 like yesterday, but today 17 felt quite chilly.

For me, the best part of the route was along the beach. If it had been warmer, we might have stopped and taken more photos of the beach.

Our distance ... 28.04 km

It's the law here in Tasmania ...

Park amenities ... and the path in the second photo leads to the beach ...

Alarming is the word!! As short as I can say it, I live in a very rural area and have taken long walks at night for 20 years I've lived here. I can go months without ever seeing a car while walking.

It seems a car was parked (lights out) on a connecting road to mine and they were watching me for quite a while then decided to "get me" After nearly running me down one of two people in the car jumped out the other was doing drugs probably ICE. He was hyped up wanting to fight, I tried to reason with him and calm the situation to no avail he wanted to take me down, I took at least several hits and a kick to my mid section blocking punches to my face. The guy was getting more and more psyhco like you wouldn't believe.

The lucky for me part is I was near another homestead 2.5km from my home so run for it, he couldn't catch me so run to his car to chase me with. I was able to hide in a tractor shed while they were screaming and driving like crazy all over to find me. I moved into a open paddock in total darkness making my way home across fields calling the police.

A two hour police statement was made the next day so there's a lot more detail to the story than said here. I firmly believe they were after an opportunistic thrill kill thinking the remoteness and lack of witnesses they could get away with it. If they got me weakened on the ground I think I would have been bundled into there car and a whole lot worse done to me elsewhere.

I'm quite rattled now part of the reason I didn't ride today and and just bought a four channel security system so I can monitor around home. Actually feel a little better typing this as a bit of a release too. It seems were not safe anywhere even in the country.

~55 mile 'recovery ride' from last week's DC.

Ended up hammering pretty hard, & took 2 minutes off my time up the 1,500' climb.

1st ride on some used carbon wheels. There was a slightly disturbing noise from the front, but I think that it's the valve stem rattling against the rim.

Beautiful Spring day, lots of cyclists out, not that much wildlife otherwise.

Wow, glad to hear you're okay. Yeah, I might feel like staying indoors too. Sometimes when I have a fantasy about getting away from it all I do worry about being isolated like this, of course bad things can happen anywhere. I hope they catch the creeps and you're able to get the peace of mind to return to some bike riding.

I had a strong 40 mile ride on Saturday back to the Upper Tampa Bay trail. Another 35 miles on Sunday around S. Tampa. I've also been adding in Monday nights. So I'm back to a little over 100 miles a week which for me is about right.

The spring weather has hit here and the last few weeks have been a welcomed change. I just hit my usual weekend ride up and down the river trail here - 55.6 miles Saturday and got in a metric century Sunday. A little sunburned on my arms, but otherwise feeling pretty good.

That first ride in warmer temps usually catches me off-guard and I end up with a bit of a sunburn too.
