Found this stainless steel sculpture in Morton, IL called the Giving Tree. First time that I've seen it. It's pretty cool in person.
Untitled by trsnrtr, on Flickr
BTW, I ran a shallow rim wheel today on the front rather than my normal 55mm wheel due to the wind advisory. Good thing, too. One of the riders in my group had a pretty hard time with deep rims.

You're right. There really is something gorgeous about a well turned out vintage roller. There was some real art, and it wasn't computer generated.

...there is a large body of knowledge involved in orchards and their management. I know a lot of it. That said, I'd rather be lucky than smart. I think you'd be very surprised to know how easily a tree is lost, even in a professionally managed orchard, and how hard some people work so you can eat apples, Mr. Grass Seed Saver.

The car is so much fun to drive it's hard to describe. What a blast. And it is fast. Very, very fast.

The Old Apple Tree has had many grafts. It's kinda like a 5-man band with only one original member left.

Casually Deliberate
A lady came through my register this evening and said "I'm not having a very good day. I went to the doctor for what I thought were just general aches and pains and getting old and instead he diagnosed me with rheumatoid arthritis." I wondered if it might be arthritis, caused by some high blood pressure medication, like my mom had, but I just said "Man, that's too bad." She said "And I can't even take the best medicine for it because I have asthma." I said "You have asthma and you're allergic to aspirin?" She said "Well, nonsteroid anti-inflammatories is what they told me." I said "Let me guess. Do you also have polyps in your sinuses?" She said "Yes! I do. How did you know that?" I said "I believe you have a condition called Samter's Triad and I say that because I have it too."
Turns out, she had her first allergic reaction to aspirin while she was in the Enchanted Tiki room- or, as she put it, the Tiki Tiki room- and they had to whisk her away down one of the secret passages to a sort of urgent care room where they gave her epinephrine. It was so fast and so secret that her husband had no idea where she'd gone.
She said "I'm sure glad I ran into you. This is the best news I've had in a while. I had no idea these symptoms had a name. Nobody ever told me that. Now I can go home and look it up anyway." But after she left, I got to wondering: Nobody knows what causes Samter's Triad, which usually begins in young adulthood but not in my case or hers, and nobody knows what causes rheumatoid arthritis. (So far as I've heard.) Is there a higher incidence of RA among people who already have this triad? Not that it really matters, I guess, since all you can do is address the problems rather than prevent them. But I'm curious just the same.

...it's good you can carry the bike, so when they impound the car for one too many speeding tickets you'll be able to ride it home.

I always plead Not Guilty. I always plea down to 'parking on pavement'. Where else would you park? How they came up with the name for that imaginary offense everybody pleads down to in speeding cases around here is a mystery to me. But if I can pay $100-$150 to the town and not get points on my license, I'm all for it.

I am broken hearted today to relay the very sad news that our own coasting, Charlie from England and late of Taipei, passed away suddenly in the past few days.
I met Charlie in London on a layover flying back to NY from Greece in 2010. He was the sweetest man on the planet. He thanked me for saving his life (I had urged him to go to a cardiologist, he did, and it turned out to be a good thing he did). Must have been heart troubles. He would have been in the range of 45 years old by now. I'm very sad.
RIP Charlie/coasting. We loved you and your sense of humor. You never failed to brighten our days. You will be sorely missed.

Nice car, PCAD. I hope you enjoy it.
My dad just picked up a 1983 fire-engine red Mercedes convertible (560 SEL maybe? I don't really care much about cars). He loves it and said the only thing he doesn't like is that it's auto instead of manual.
I don't know what it is with old guys and sports cars.
Must be something about getting old and wanting to recapture lost youth.

As for old guys and sports cars, I have wanted a Corvette since I was 16 or 17, I finally cobbled together the financial resources to procure a used C6, so I pounced. You only live once. I had enough money to buy a new one, I did not. I keep telling Mrs. Pcad that far from being a profligate spender, this underscores my virtues as a model of fiscal restraint.
That last argument doesn't seem to be working, but as long as I have that red Corvette, I could give a flying fark. She seemed to like riding in it last night. Maybe I'll get laid more now.

Need to work on the staging though. You'll never get a "hot" with a pic like that.
