Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Happy Easter!! Tell us about all the cycling you do over Easter. Lots of time off = lots of time cycling.

Friday - 40.52 km on old familiar roads in an area where we used to live. So nice to ride there again. Really nice! And it helped that the sun shone, the sky was blue and there wasn't too much wind. The high for the day reached 23C ... a hint of summer!

We also walked 8.5 km. 6.5 km earlier in the day when we first arrived, and then another 2 km to go to dinner.

Sadly, I will be ride free this weekend. Too much preparing to do for Easter. We host a family and friends Easter egg hunt and brunch on Sunday. If I'm not too wiped out after work on Monday I will take a shot at a ride.

It might be relaxing just to get away for an hour to ride.

Tomorrow 66miles, 6+k, 1/2 dirt, 1/2 road, on cross bike.

Put it out as group ride- we'll see if any group develops.

Last time on a similar outing, got out there, stick in the RD, limped home single speed. Also wheel-stopping mud.

Should be better conditions now.

Edit:

It was a group of one, but I did an excellent job of keeping us together.
Lots of poison oak, turkey vultures, & cows.
Tough ride- 7.5 hrs overall- definitely earned the beer.

Going out with a group tomorrow (Saturday). Relatively flat ride after two weekends of big climbs though we're shooting for 40. We ride a lot together, almost every weekend but often at our own pace, but we've been working on pace-line techniques so we're going to try to stay together and ride hard and fast. If I feel good toward the end, I'm going to peel off and climb a hill. It's supposed to be a picture-perfect day and Sunday is going to rain so might as well get in the miles while I can.

Saturday-- 35.23 km on our folders up the local Rail Trail. The longest Rail Trail in Victoria runs through this area, and I've missed it!

Partly cloudy, 23C today.

I also walked 3.8 km around town.

46.5 miles on my road bike in preparation for my 50 @ 50 on my 50th birthday-- Friday, April 24. Now that I'm riding more than 40 miles on Saturdays, I'm finding my limits. I think after I do the half century on my 50th birthday, I'll drop back into the 30s for a while. I'm in too much pain for a day after going so far.

I'd still like to do a metric century by the end of summer and a century by next summer.

A tough hilly rural Oregon 37 miles with a buddy today. Like any good ride, there was agony, there was ecstasy.

Sunday -- 40.11 km on another part of the Rail Trail up to an old train tunnel and back.

Another nice day with a high of 23C again. A little more overcast, almost threatening rain at times and some wind. But no rain materialised.

Sat: volunteered at the Jamestown Bridge 5/10k race. Was really glad to not be running.. fairly cold around 40F but windy in the 20-30mph.

Sun: 33mi group ride on a route I do a lot. legs felt better than I thought they would. Wind was rough but the temps were good at least.

I would not disagree, but there was no time. I woke up on Saturday at 7:00 am and spent the first half of the day on yard work, took a short break for lunch then spent the rest of the day on cleaning the insides of the house. Sunday woke up 7:00 again, setup tables and chairs etc. Began food prep and cooking at 9:00. By 10:45 guest began arriving. We had over 30 people show up. Everyone left around 2:00ish. By the time we finished cleaning and putting away everything it was late afternoon. The only thing I was up for was a nap.

There is still hope for a ride tonight.

First ride of spring

This 200lb guy accidentally registered for Strava's climbing challenge (~30,000ft by the end of April!) and decided to go along with it just for kicks. I left NYC (if you're not sure where that is, look on the menu at your nearest IHOP) to tackle some of the rollers in NJ. First time I rode across the GW bridge (in the background) and less than a minute after getting onto the interstate highway I got pulled over by a cop for running a light. I didn't intentionally do it; I was following a group of cyclists and wasn't even aware that there was a traffic light and I guess I got pulled over because I was on the back of the bunch. Cop let me off with a warning so it was all good. I'll pay more attention to traffic signals in the future.

Suffer score is probably way off. Its set at my LTHR (as opposed to max HR) and I had some caffeine in my carb/electrolyte mix. Regardless, I definitely felt that "lactic acid" for the majority of the ride.

Also, anyone who tries to justify the whole "big guys are mashers" needs to be kicked down the hill that they are attempting to climb. Build up your aerobic fitness and learn to spin. I actually think I could have done more riding if I had a 32T sprocket. Currently running a 11-28 and towards the end I found myself grinding a bit.

Friday: Just a quick evening ride before sunset, 17mi.

Saturday: Got in a 27mi. morning ride with an older cycling buddy. It was a beautiful day for a ride, only wishing it could have been longer.

Comments: Joined some fellow BF members from this board along the coast. They started from Angels stadium, I just rode from my house and met them in Laguna Beach. Fun ride, perfect weather, had mild 3-5mph winds all day. Just enough to keep the sweat from standing too long.

somewhere in Laguna called Goff Island, guess it that big rock outside of the cove. This was where I waited for the BF group.

Somewhere along dana point state beach

overlooking a very popular surf break called Trestles beach. had to ride dirt 100 yards and the carbon bike didn't explode

Well I did get out last night for 33 miles around downtown Tampa and Davis Is. Several notable things. I saw multiple groups of people using the new bike share program, which I thought was encouraging. There were some Nuns rollerblading, which I thought was amusing. The city completed the final link up of our downtime riverwalk. I rode along there to check it out. It is pretty nice, however, not something I would repeat on my bike. It is really for the slow cruiser crowd and strolling, but we have been waiting for a pedestrian friendly waterfront experience in Tampa FOREVER.
