"It's a thin line...between love and hate."
I'm hating cycling about now. My buddy got hurt (again) when his foot came out of his pedal and he crashed. Damn, how does that happen? Just one more thing to worry about. He had a concussion in a crash last year. I began thinking there are many reasons to hate cycling. I come from a long career as a runner that ended with a weird, minor, permanent overuse injury that effects no part of my life except for running. I hate the ever-present risk of serious injury or death in cycling. Crashing in the group, having your foot come out of the pedal, hitting a pothole, hitting a dog, getting hit by a car, getting stranded by a mechanical, being limited by weather, the fact that the workouts take so long.
Yet, I keep doing it. I pray to La Madonna del Ghisallo for all cyclists, and hope for the best.

We're going to quietly back away now. You just try to get some rest. It will be all better in the morning.
Oh, by the way before I go, do you hate driving too? That has some pretty lousy statistics. Oops, I didn't mean to upset you. Bye-bye now.

OP,
You are (my assumption) not being paid to ride your bike; you are, like pretty much everyone else on these forums, a recreational cyclist of some form or other. So stop; hang up the bike. Call it quits. Say bye-bye.

I sometimes sing to myself the song from the thread title,
except changing the lyrics-
"It's a thin line... between fish and bait."
"it's a thin line... between lizards and snakes."
etc. etc. We simpletons are easily entertained, & it distracts from worrying about feet coming out of pedals.

Do you live in either WA or CO? If so, you should consider self medicating.

Complete and Total Ineptitude would be my guess.
when his foot came out of his pedal
This has been a technical "must have" since the 19th century and more than adequately replaced by the advent of Look's "clipless" system a few decades ago for the most powerful and aggressive cyclists on the planet.
One would have to put that down to either:
A) Sprinting in shower clogs & platform pedals in the rain.
2) A Houdini-like escape from whatever cleated foot-retention system was employed.
Just riding a bicycle is Not for Everyone, taking up Cycling is a whole other Deal.
Golf, try taking up golf.

That would imply not using shoes with cleats and straps circa 1898.

Once again:

Golf, try taking up golf. It's not that frightening, the hardware consumes $$$$ and the down side is a sand trap instead of the frightening pedal thing.

I don't remember the 2009 TdF; I do remember the 2005 one where he came in second to Zabriskie by two seconds. He had slipped his pedal coming off the starting ramp. Sheryl Crow worried that she was the cause of it; having waved enthusiastically at him on the starting podium. Lance said "no problem", then dumped her later when she came down with cancer. "Been there, done that. Nobody is going to one-up me."

So, how does this guy fare in other areas of life?
I mean, I have a nephew (middle-aged now) who has ALWAYS managed to hurt himself, no matter what he does. He's just not careful; takes risks; isn't good at applied physics and/or is just "accidernt prone". Really, he had more injuries in just one year (name any year of his life, since he was 5) than I've had in 5 decades. You name it, he'll hurt himself doing it. As a kid, no matter what he'd play with...he'd end up hurting himself. The same ineptitude carried-over in his adult like. Bike accidents; pogo-stick accident; skiing accident; falling down the stairs.... The doofus could probably cut himself on a nerf ball....
I notice too, that some cyclists have the idea that: "I'm not slowing down for anything". They hear a dog; or see a car at the end of a driveway; etc. instead of taking a little caution, they'd rather exercise "their rights to use the roads". I mean, O-K, sometimes you can just be in the wrong place at the wrong time, and some accidents are truly unavoidable, yada, yada.....but when you see the same people getting injured/being in accidents (of whatever variety) even if the accidents are not technically their fault...there's usually a reason why it keeps happening to the same people; they're just not exercising due caution.
Personally, I guess growing up around people like my nephew, I've learned from such people....what not to do. You don't have to be a statistic. Yes, we all are at a certain risk no matter what we do.....but if we minimize that risk, the odds are pretty good that we won't be the klutz. That unavoidable accident may happen once....but if we're at least reasonably cautious; and diligent, the odds of it happening multiple times are staggering.

To the Op.
Honestly. Are you mad about not being able to run or are you mad about cycling? Either way, I hope you find your happy exercise in whatever form it is.

You have an advanced case of "Come-Out-of-Pedal-Phobia", a rare cycling/psychological condition that is only cured by riding a fixed gear w/ proper foot retention for 1,000 miles or taking up Golf if it scares you beyond your comfort range.
One or the other.

I still golf and can still manage the mid-70s for 18 holes on just about any course, but I'd rather spend 4 hours on my bike for free than four hours stuck behind some slow foursome of guys and have to pay $40-$70 for the privilege to do so.

On the plus side, cycling has more things to buy and play with like tires, wheels, shifters, stems and bars. Running just has shoes. You can pick red ones, green, blue, etc. It's not like SRAM, Shimano or Campy. Plus choosing between a size 10 D and 10 EE isn't as controversial as a 23 versus 25 tire.
