Have You Crashed on an Expensive Bike?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Hit the deck at 35mph during a race once. $6000 bike came out spotless, minus some torn bar tape. Me? Helmet and kit trashed, lots of road rash.

Another time, I was hit by a car at 5mph on my S-Works and virtually everything was damaged. Cracked frame, bent/scratched shifters, etc.

Crashed last season on a training ride whilst on a $12000 bike, dislocated/broken ribs, torn kit, smashed a new POC Octal, took me a few minutes to find one of my shoes. Bike only suffered a scuff on the left brake lever and some scratches on the top of the carbon saddle, I don't think my hands ever left the handlebar until I came to a stop.

Sounds like you came out ok, but it might not hurt to have your shop check your RD hangar to make sure it didn't get bent out of alignment. Or buy the tool yourself, it's not terribly expensive.

My worst crash was at the Solvang Century and I got a separated shoulder and an ambulance ride. There was an instantaneous pile up in front of me and I plowed right into it and went flying into the pavement superman style.

I also dumped my Spectrum in a low water crossing filled with slime, but that was at low speed and nothing was hurt except for some torn tights.

Me and my friend crashed into each other doing about 71mph going down hill at Plattekill back in 95. He split his knee open and had to be helicoptered to the nearest hospital. It was awesome. I was fine thanks to full body armor. Both bikes were fine too.

In 1991 or 92 I crashed at about 35 mph coming down a hill in the Marin headlands aboard my original Kestrel monocoque - which I had paid $2400 for (used). I tacoed the front wheel, but other than that I don't remember any damage. That thing may have been "space age" for the time, but it was a tank. I suffered only horrific road rash along my entire left side. I had to carry the bike about 2 miles to a shopping center where I could call a cab to get me back home to San Franciso. It was a $70 ride.

Since then, I have been wreck free (standard low - mid speed MTB wrecks don't count).
