And FWIW, if you can't take a drink and hold your line (regardless of your position in the group), you might need to be riding with a slower group that caters to new riders while you practice one of the fundamental skills for group riding.

I like to stop my bike in the middle of the road and then announce at the top of my lungs, "Hear ye! Hear ye! I have hereto paused to quench my most unfortunate thirst by partaking of this, the glorious bidon of Antioch! Be ye ware to cease your onward travels and look on with great awe and adulation!"

On some of the rides I do, that would be the signal for the big horses to drill it and drop the drinker and everyone behind him.

Exactly, why advertise that its a good time to attack you, or that you may be suffering.

That is worse than groups with excessive calling out of obstacles, cars, etc. Can't we have a nice, quiet paceline, with normal conversations and no drama?

Yep. They taught me that the first time I rode with them too.

For proper paceline riding I agree that such signals are moot because if you are taking a drink, there shouldn't be anyone directly behind you at the time. However, there are situations when there is little or no rotating - a guided ride, or long stretches through towns where single file is strictly enforced. In such cases, it might be too much to ask to wait, and a good idea to let the guy behind you know that you're about to put your bottle back in its cage. Generally speaking I don't think drinking or pulling the bottle out is so disruptive to ones cadence.

Drinking at the front or in the gaining line is the most assinine, selfish, and detrimental endeavor in the world; unless you are bernard hinault or something. I almost got taken out by some nutsack who tried to drink at the front then dropped his waterbottle in front of me. Know how to pace yourself and drink appropriatly, if you can't then either suffer or get dropped instead of infecting the group with you bad habits.

If it's not, you've got bigger problems because you're not looking where you're going.

Every year my wife and I do this supported week long trip. If I am on my own I often ask and join groups of riders, being on a touring bike with fenders and a rack its nice to make up some time at speeds I can't do on my own. There is one fellow who I see every year who I've ridden with a bunch of times and he does this. I'd never seen this before but it was apparent from the first time that his exaggerated arm movement was a signal that he does in his club or whatever.
He is from the Quebec City area, a long way from Florida.
re: excessive calls for everything under the sun. I once showed a visiting group around Montreal by bike, a supported group that had ridden to Montreal over a week or so, and they called out everything, all the time. The funniest was that when on bike paths they would always call out people walking ahead, with "WALKER UP" being yelled. As I watch The Walking Dead I found it pretty funny, but the humour did wear off after a while.

That description made my day. I imagine 20 riders in a choreographed ballet pointing their arms out and down.
Just drink at the back. If your group does pacelining efficiently you won't be at the front for more than a few seconds anyway.

This is a very interesting thread. I'm thinking it should be in the Humor section, but everyone avoids that category like it's the plague. In fact I just started a thread there titled Things You Shouldn't Do on a Bike. Maybe signaling that you're about to take a sip should be there. Anyway...
IF I signaled that I was going to chug from my Big Gulp I'd probably find it suitable to make a hand motion similar to the sign for 'drink' that's used in American Sign Language. It would be easy to adapt this sign to signaling to people behind you. That's my 2/100 of a $1 for what it's worth.

What, you don't appreciate the guy who incessantly announces "CAR UP!!!!" when cars approach coming at you, on the other side of a long, straight patch of road?
