Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Coffee in the water bottle

I got up a bit late this morning. So instead of enjoying my coffee on the porch, I just filled my Podium Chill water bottle with the hot coffee. It was very enjoyable riding and drinking my morning coffee. Who would have known.

Does anyone else do this? Am I breaking any bike riding rule?

What do you guys think?

Wow I thought a streak of flat tires would be the worst punishment for violating the style gods. It was worth the risk coffee is a necessity of life second only to beer.

Pro riders getting a hot drink (tea usually) is actually very common in pro peloton on those hideously cold days.

Of course they have the luxury of using new bottles. The only problem for everyone else is alternating between tea, water, and sports drinks in the same bottles. Might get weird after tastes.

I've got a couple of the polar bottles... I don't use them in the summer, I'd rather have the extra volume in water.

However, I started filling mine with Hot Chocolate.

I mostly gave up coffee a year or two ago.

I've stopped at Starbucks occasionally and rode at a slow pace while sipping my coffee but it was cause I was close to my destination. That's about it for me.

I've used my empty water bottle to carry some shots home to drink later.

Eddie B used to recommend a special bottle for TTs to be drank at the turn of Coffee, laced with sugar, ( and optionally a shot of rum)

Tried it (sans rum). Nearly puked.

I've used iced tea but never hot coffee. For early morning rides sometime I make tea the night before with powdered sports drink dissolved in it. Caffeine, calories, electrolytes in a bottle.

On my morning commute I'll fill a small Podium bottle with a coffe I made the night before, and chilled overnight. That bottle is used only for coffee.

I've done with metal bottles only. I can't stand drinking hot coffee out of anything plastic.

I have to admit the plastic water bottle is a big negative. It is just one step up from a stryofoam cup. That being said it got me out earlier and let me extend my ride. It was gorgeous yesterday and I got 44 miles in before I had to take care of yard work.

I am not even a fan of the paper cup's from your local coffee shop. A nice espresso mug is much preferred!

If your stomach tolerates it and it works for you, then go for it. An iced coffee actually sounds pretty refreshing. I tried orange juice w/ice on a hot day and nearly puked. Won't ever do that again.

I heard that's the main ingredient in coffee. So you are probably correct.

Not really, I have often done this in the winter with hot tea or coffee laced with sugar or honey with the tea and Iced coffee and tea in the warmer months. Fairly solid research out there showing that caffeine during a workout can increase the time before glycogen stores are depleted by 30 %.

Thought about trying tea once but it makes me pee and when I would want to have tea is when it's cold and when it's cold outside, I'd rather keep it in my shorts.

Funny, but that's about the only time I'll drink coffee- on the bike- in cold weather.

Big Chill won't keep it hot very long though.....so I got me a HydroFlask bottle; and a Kleen Kanteen Sport Cap 3.0 top for it.

Nasty to me but who am I to judge. On a recent 200K I filled my Polar bottle with Ice and coke, first time ever doing that but I must admit that it was really refreshing.

+1. This is what I do on hot days. Starbucks mocha (in a bottle kind - Costco by the tray) with four ice cubes.
