Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

In a triathlon, it bothers me. The bike is my leg. Even though I ride a road bike, it is rare for anyone to pass me, and only one person has ever passed me on a road bike in a tri.

On a regular ride, it doesn't bother me with one exception. Three years ago I started riding with someone who was slower than me. Hills, sprints, it didn't matter, I was faster. Well, he is about 10 years younger than I am, and he just keeps getting faster. I don't. On our last ride, he beat me on every hill and all but one sprint. I spent the entire time chasing his jersey. It drives me crazy that he has gotten so much faster and I haven't.

I have had random men get upset when I pass them. They chase me down and make comments about they can't let a woman ride past them like that. They are ******s.

Stuff like that??"

I got passed by the Italian National team training for the World Championships and they graciously invited me to their wheels. Now, that was a treat. They used their hands a lot when talking. I just sucked wind.

Definition of a speech impediment: An Italian with a broken arm.

Hopefully they did not stick a frame pump in your front wheel...

For the most part I don't care. I'm older and ride a heavier steel bike so I'm not going to pass a whole lot of people anyways. The only time I take notice is for my own yardstick of how I'm doing on a ride that day.

I got passed once. I used to pretend I was an Italian exchange student to impress this girl. I would ride all over on my bike. I end up signing up for this local race because my favorite italian team is coming to do a little demo.
I end up blowing their doors off for a while until they came up on me and started messing with my bike. Eventually they got so annoyed at me passing them that they jammed something in my front wheel. I took a really nasty fall. The whole field passed me. It was then i realized that the world isn't exactly what i thought it was. I was crushed that day. I went home and cried on my dad's shoulder. I never pretended to be an exchange student again. The girl got pissed that i lied too.

On a side note i ended up killing it at a local school race that was held on a running track.

Different rides for different days. Also since I am 62 I can generally figure most people that do pass me are younger, so who cares. If I pass someone I can feel good that I did it despite being older than they are. So I can't loose.

Aside from the regulars on my routes, I never know who it is or what they're doing so no, there is no mental anguish when I get passed.

There's a local pro development team that sometimes rides a lap or two on the Greenway. I only figured that out when one of them beat my KOM on the access road ... during his recovery ride. They're fast riders, but zone 1 or 2 on the Greenway so it's meaningless who passes who. Any random rider, at any speed, could be like that.

We had a miniature dachshund we used to let ride in a front basket. She barked at anyone who passed us. Enough said.

If there is someone behind me that does not pass me, I stop and check on them to make sure they are still breathing.

If you are not in a race, passing another cyclist doesn't necessarily mean you are faster than him/her - they might be doing a recovery ride, cooling down after a hammerfest, or finishing up a 600 mile randonneur! Heck, even in a race, passing another cyclist doesn't mean you are faster, either (unless in a TT or in the sprint). So many variables.

BUT, if you are the one being passed and it bothers you to the point that makes you train harder and become a better cyclist - then good for you!

I never have, and never will understand this. I know guy's that feel this way as well. Runners, and cyclist. I have never been bothered by being passed by a woman. For all I know she may just be a born natural. Have any of these guy's ever heard of Crissie Wellington? She would blow a lot of men (including me) right off the road. Silly IMHO.

Speaking of Crissie, you said you have rarely been passed in a Tri, then you would have been very upset if you were one of these ladies....https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qtslGL9Qat8

Being a heavier rider myself, I definitely do not try to match the pace of a lighter riding who flies past me, especially on a climb; its a recipe for disaster.

If you ever want to improve as a cyclist you need to understand a concept called tempo - momentarily accelerating to blow past someone who doesn't even know you are attempting to race them only to run out of breath a couple minutes later does very little for your overall fitness even if it does boost your self-esteem. Of course this doesn't apply if you're doing interval training.
I agree. If I was racing than YES, it would bother me to get passed if I knew that it was a situation where I was not going to take him down the road. No competitive person wants to lose. If I am not racing, than not at all. Why would it?

If I am in a "friendly" race during a ride I would be ok with losing but not if I allowed myself to entertain thoughts of allowing it. It drives me nuts to think that I may actually break mentally. It has not happened yet but I hate when I have to fight back the thought of it. Mentally breaking scares me far more than losing.

I like getting passed. Then I give about 10-15 bike lengths and see how long I can keep their pace. My rule is not to pass someone that passes me if I had to work to catch up to them. But as to not know how slow I am at a charity ride... I like to give everyone a 10 minute head start. That way I can say that I passed more people than they passed me.

It never bothers me, and it happens frequently, as slow as I am, but it must bother some of the kids that feel its a necessary expenditure, to pass an old guy with health issues. I must get into their heads something fierce.
