How many of you ride in the mornings?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I prefer riding in the morning and find I work harder on morning ride than afternoon rides.
I'm an early riser, and like to hit the road by sunrise.

Go to bed by 2000 hrs and up every single day of the week at 0250am and out the door on my bicycle by 0445am 7 days a week weather permitting. I ride the same 20 miles every single day to the tune of 4500 miles a year. Its nice to have a Lupine Betty R14 4500 Lumen Bike light to turn utter darkness into total daylight. I have now been doing this for 6 years...I would be lost without my morning fix on the bike..

I used to ride very early in the morning like 6 AM but not anymore . I find it hard to get up at 5 AM to get ready for the 6 AM ride last few years as I age . Now I wait till 10 AM before head out for a 3 hour ride .

What a bunch of Type A freaks!!

I hate early morning rides, really... it's hard for me to get going good enough to make it a good workout, I hate futzing with the layering required to deal with the temp swing, all it does is make me feel tired during the day, and I hate waking up early.

All that said, I do one 6:30am stationary ride at the studio year-round, and add at least one other 6:30am ride during spring/summer (because many of my friends are type A freaks).

If I had my druthers, I'd ride from 11am-3pm all the time.

Sounds like people mostly feel pretty good about getting up before dawn to ride. Thanks, everybody, for chiming in!

Some coincidence this topic was raised today: for the first time since moving to the suburbs I got out before getting ready for work. Since the move until now I'd only gotten to ride on weekends. Never was one to exercise any time but morning, maybe mid-day. I'm by no means a "type A" I just really like mornings.

The trick is I'm already fit enough to maintain a reasonable easy pace without breaking a sweat here where it's not hot. And work starts late, so I don't have to leave home until 7:30.

I ride every morning Mon-Fri to work. If I had a long night or don't feel like riding my wife takes me. I take the same route every morning because it's the most efficient. I take different routes on the way back home.

NOT a morning person!

However, I have ridden in the mornings for commutes and long distance rides.

Every now and then I debate about cycling to work now, but I would have to get up really early for that because of the distance and mountain range I would have to deal with ... and that thought usually has me thinking more favourably about the bus.

As for long rides ... because I like doing long rides, and because I like doing long rides in daylight, I will get up early to do long rides. I'm not usually moving well for for the first couple hours, but I'll be out there turning over the pedals. Later in the day I'll get my energy and often the last half of the ride will be faster than the first.

It helps if you live in a mild climate where the temperature/humidity don't induce sweat by themselves, too.

Get up at 5 and ride the trainer. Not a morning person but with 2 kids and a busy schedule its just what I have to do to get rides in.

I commute to work and I don't have showers. I shower before I leave. It is only 3 miles and I don't ride it hard so I don't really work up a sweat.

Normaly, mid day
It doesn't work. The higher humidity in the morning makes it miserable. Best time to ride is the hottest part of the day, 3-6pm. Those white arm and leg covers help a lot.

Every am going to work. Weekends often get a ride in before the kids get up. Have started solo double centuries at 2 am. 2 to 6 am is a nice time to ride. Road or bike path you are mostly alone and can drop into a nice groove.

Do you ever feel limited on your early morning rides, like you can't just go as far as you like because you have to get home and make it to work?

I have a wife and kids. I cannot think of ANY ride where I didn't feel limited as to how much I could ride.

I have a live-in girlfriend and no kids. She prefers me to get home sooner and do things with her, but she forgives me if when don't...

How do you define "Make it work"? I get up ridiculously early, go do a ride, come home, shower, go to work...I suppose those days when I do all that are the ones where I'm much more likely to feel like I deperately want a nap by mid-afternoon. All things being equal I'd rather stay up late, wake up late, and ride later in the day.

Oh hell no, that would just be boring.

Fortunately I work 10 to 6:30 so I can wake up and be on the road by 6:10 and put in 25-30 miles with enough time to get ready and get to work. I do this 3-4 times per week.

i would do an evening ride for fitness but i've been taking care of the fam. if we do anything active, we have been doing runs in the evening or workouts at the gym.

i just started doing morning rides last week. it's hard to wake up at 6 am but it was pretty rewarding/awesome. my legs were jello later. i am new to road cycling and it was my first group ride. i'll be doing more. they are great fun before the commute ride to work.

I agree. But we live in CA. Not too much humidity here in comparison to FL where your how-do-you-do sticks just by standing around.

I like to start my rides about a half hour before sunrise. It's cool, little wind and less traffic. And when I'm done, I still have the whole day ahead of me for other stuff.

Very true as summer approaches. And then there's the daily afternoon thunderstorms to consider just when you're ready to go home.
