Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I also have to be careful. I am so glad Wegmans sells Cliff bars and shot bloks. That way the food comes in under the radar as it's in the groceries.

I work hard and my Wife never gives me a hard time when I spend a little on bike stuff. I just purchased Assos bib shorts and we agreed it could be my Fathers day gift.

So I got the new bike. Day 1, first ride, and I ate **** riding down a boulder and destroyed the saddle, scratched the rear section of the frame, the rear derailleur, ripped a shift cable, and messed up my wrist.

That's mountain biking I guess.

Can't wait to fix it up today and get out there again later.

$375 or $400 on bike shoes is a good long term investment that should provide good service for over ten years. Buy the best and keeping it a long time is better than buying second rate and replacing it in a few years.

A true cheap bastid will buy the second rate shoes and make them last for over ten years.

...brace your wrist. I once did a wrist thing that I ignored, later morphed into carpal tunnel, and became very problematic.

If you want to keep working as a mechanic, your wrists are kinda important. #rubberdown_saddleup

I had a pair of cheaper Sidi with plastic soles that were ok and lived with them for about 10 years and replaced them once they became stretched out.
My new carbon sole Sworks are so much better with no more hot spots! I am sure the highend Sidi's are also good.

Moral to story you live once and it was a mistake to live with the cheaper shoes for ten years.

Same here. When my camera equipment topic pops up, the most info I will give her is "it's pricey". And I will defend that line in the sand to the death.

The moral I get from that story is that Specialized shoes are better than Sidi shoes.

What route did you take? Sunrise Hwy at least partially, for sure.

Did you hobknob with any Hamptons cool kids?

I am not sure that they are better than Sidi but the best S Works model (with carbon Soles) costs $400 while the best Sidi's cost about $500. The moral is that getting first rate does not mean that you need to spend the most money.

No Sunrise Hwy, MontauK Hwy ( which is a road not a Hwy) Montauk Ride 2015 - 135 - A bike ride in NYC, NY

I hobknob with the cool kids from NYC that are part of NYCC. It is a great club with an interesting mix of people.

Cool.

That looks like a lot of fun. Nice and flat. I wish I could do something like that, but alas, those days are gone. Just shorter rides for me now. Looks like you went right through Amityville, my ancestor's home. Cool.

Well in this case my cheap stuff lasted over 10 years. I agree generally but no way im plunking down 300 + bucks for a pair of shoes or a helmet.

That'd be me. Gotta remember my wife, a doctors wife to boot, gets all her clothes at goodwill. She sets a pretty high cheap standard for me to follow.
