Robert is famous. Or infamous, depending on your point of view.

And the $170 Specialized Comp is a damn fine shoe. My first pair are going strong at about 5 years. I just got tired of them so I bought another pair to have something new. That buy the best and keep it forever stuff has a lot of pitfalls. There is always an optimum value compromise that isn't about the priciest. Folks who don't know how to find it are destined to over pay or under buy. Schade!

The $170 are fine but have plastic soles which would result in hot spots on 90 mile rides, if are doing 20 or 30 miles thst are a good way to go.

Interesting. Of course carbon soles are plastic too, but I suspect you meant flexible plastic soles. I have always worn moderately priced cycling shoes and never had a problem on centuries. Just lucky I guess.

I agree it's worth investing in a good quality shoe, but you don't have to pay MSRP for them. There are many good deals to be had if you look around and are patient. I just bought Shimano's top of the line, carbon sole, heat moldable shoe, that lists at $487 for around $180. My last few pairs of shoes also had carbon fiber composite soles which were very stiff.

Some feet are less sensitive so I am glad they work for you. I still think carbon soles are the way to go.

I wonder what the history of this is. Pros and enthusiasts in the past rode with leather soles or even leather/wood soles far more flexible than the glass-reinforced nylon ones we have in moderately priced shoes today. Maybe that is where the original "hotfoot" complaints came from.

40ish mile out to scout the course for next week's 20k TT. Rode out with a friend who has done it a number of times. Located the start and the turn-around. I decided while I was out there to just ride the course TT-style but below my target power for next week. For a simple thing, riding a TT is tricky. Damn undulating earth surface. Per coach, I'm supposed to go all-out for the last minute. There are no markers on the course, so I needed to find my landmarks. So after riding 20 miles out there and the 12ish mile TT course, I then did a bunch of 1 min strong efforts. Very tired legs. And then 20 miles more to get back to town.
I rode with one of my favorite cycling friends who I haven't ridden with for months. Just awesome to ride with him again, we ride really well together. We also got crop-dusted by a helicopter and chased by a big farm dog.
Recovery ride tomorrow, then some intervals before leaving town for a conference. I'm sneaking out of the conference a half day early. Why? I have to get home in time to get ready for the TT. Lol, I for sure have my priorities straight.
