The Guy that rides group and only Group! MOUTH ALLMIGHTY!

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I don't know anyone like that. But I don't do group rides. If I did, and there was somebody that loud and obnoxious, I'd find a different group or stop doing group rides.

You know there's actually a lot more to riding a bike than going fast. Even for racing. I remember this fat guy passing me going down a hill, then slowing almost to a stop to go through some switchbacks because he couldn't corner on the bike. Skill trumps strength any day. Plus there's rolling around on a nice day, enjoying the wind on your face and the scenery, feeling the burn, challenging yourself on a big hill, and spending most of the day outdoors. Cycling can actually be really enjoyable.

I'm surprised no one has ever told a loudmouth like that to STFU. There are plenty of cyclists that will voice their discontent with a jerk in a car but why not the same for a jerk on a bicycle?

In other words, people don't like to ride with you very often.

Me thinks @rpenmanparker might have hit on something.

I think you need a harder ride. A ride hard enough that he's either dropped or he's too hypoxic to talk so much.

I've known guys like that, but fortunately (knock wood) haven't encountered such on group rides yet. I have, however, encountered a bunch of loudmouthed Brooklyn broads on a couple of group rides (surprisingly fast and enduring, despite their skirts - yes, skirts). Although they seem averse to or incapable of riding single file, they did shut up when the ride leader gave a speech addressed to the whole group - but clearly meant for those women.
So, OP, more than likely you aren't the only one in your group who feels the way you do. If you haven't done so already, feel the issue out with some of the others. If there is a leader or someone who is more or less responsible for organizing the ride, bring it up to that person. Then the leader can say "everybody remember: don't (insert undesirable activity here)!" and everybody will know he or she means "you, Mr. Blowhard, need to stop...." without being confrontational. At the same time, anyone who was starting to think that what Blowhard was doing was OK will probably stop thinking so.

This group riding is serious business.

I can say that I can't think of anyone like that in the sphere of those I ride with.

Ah crap. Does that mean I'm that guy?!!?!

Ask the guys to do a hard paceline and see him either A: STFU B: Get dropped

Same thing on the hills. Get 2-3 guys do a hard pace.

Always works

Thanks for the advice. There is a Hilly ride this wednesday, Maybe we will increase our pace a little on the 4 mile hill, and not wait at the top this time, just for a reality check. Thanks again

He needs to be in the "A" group where he'll be working too hard to run his mouth. Also if he wont pull no one will work with him.

+1. I've noticed people like this more in the B rides around where I live. On most of the A rides around here, it's like a race where folks try to drop you & unless you are a true stud you have to work to stay with the pack. Almost all of these guys let their riding to the talking. They do brag some afterwards, but to me it's deserved if they are the fastest.

@Hbrown, remember that time you freaked out and threatened to crush our collective souls at that velothon in Philly? That's the sort of thing the guy you're complaining about would do. Food for thought.

How did that go? I actually genuinely hope you enjoyed it and were inspired to enter some real races as a result, they can be quite cathartic if you're dealing with a lot of heavy stuff in your life as you seem to be...
