Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

That intermittent clicking/ticking sound that drives you nuts.

You know the one...it's not a regular or rhythmic sound that would easily be diagnosed. Nope--this comes and goes seemingly at random.

And the best part--as soon as you walk in the door of your LBS to have the mechanic take a listen...he looks at you like you're a fool, because the bike is quiet as a cat.

Rear QR first check. You have a Trek I assume you have a press fit BB, that's next. Hope it's not #2 ...that's not the easiest fix.

Those drive me crazy. I end up practically submerging my bike in lube to shut the thing up.

I had one of those this morning, but found it: water bottle boss bolt.

I had a creak a few weeks ago that was so loud I thought my bike was gonna assplode. I was already mentally shopping for a new frame.

Rear QR was loose, no idea how or why but phew.

Sometimes my leather Brooks and Selle An-atomica seats squeaks and sometimes they don't. Go figure? Yes it is annoying.

I've only had that happen on my main bike once. Seat post needed lubing. Otherwise, that bike is scary quiet. Except for when I upshift and then the click / THUNK of the shifter (record) and the chain dropping. I've startled people doing that as I go around them (on the odd occasion I'm passing someone).

Valve stem in a carbon rim, internal cables, loose seatpost where it attaches to the saddle...

The front bearing in my Mavic wheel set dried up, and began to make an infrequent ticking sound about 8 years ago. I put a couple drops of oil in the bearing, and that quieted it down until recently. I guess it's time to replace the bearings.

Good article: Repair | Bicycling

Mine was a loose bottom bracket, not hand loose, but 75% of proper torque loose. I was so nervous to test it after putting it back together. It was fixed, however .
1 I had already bought new pedals/cleats. Noise was still there so I tested new shoes/cleats/pedals
2 bolts on the chain ring seemed tight enough
3 not the seatpost -the noise was there in or otherwise to of the saddle
4 crank arm pedals were tightened to spec
5 unpacked the bottom bracket and noticed it felt looser than expected.

Now she's quiet, and I hope it doesn't loosen up again.

1. A weighted zipper pull knocking against my helmet buckle when riding with the wrong pavement/position/speed combination. Pactimo and Voler make their jerseys that way.

2. A Presta valve nut getting loose and rattling. I used to throw them out until I had two failures at the valve stem which moved a bit every time I inflated my tires. When I started using them again I did so on a wheelset I just built and figured there was something wrong with until I realized that for whatever reason the nuts tended to unscrew with those rims.

saddle and shoe/cleat creaking is very annoying - it's never consistent and also seems to depend on temperature, humidity and effort level.

the worst is a creak from uneven spoke tension. happens while riding and only intermittently. the last time this happened, the mech at lbs spent 30 minutes before he could diagnose it (and he's really good). he had to put all his weight on one pedal and roll along the shop floor to replicate the noise and isolate it to the spoke tension

I had a ping that would happen when riding over bumpy sections of road that I thought for sure was a loose spoke. It was just the rear brake cable slapping the top tube.

I've got one now. It happens with just about every pedal stroke at the same location, about 4 or 5oclock on my right foot side.

I've had one since around 500 miles that I assume is the CAAD10 BB noise of doom.

Intermittent though so I've lived with it.

Those riding with you were already mentally shopping for new ride partners! Thankfully I was so slow and far behind you, I didn't hear it....much.

I figure I'll just keep riding. Either the noise will go away, or get more frequent--in which case it will be easier to diagnose.

One of my bikes whistles in strong winds.

I quite like it actually.
