I took care of it already - I'm not miserly. Just common sense, which I think you're looking for here. If you don't spend more than you need to for some things, like on entry level bikes for instance, then you have more to buy other nice things with.

I was tempted to get one of the BD bikes and then move the components over to a good used frame. I saw a Tarmac SL frame used for $750. Then spend $1k on a BD bike with Ultegra bits, then sell off what you don't use to offset some of the cost. Not a bad way to get a nice bike. Of course then you run into things like the bottom bracket and headset not matching up - so forth and so on.

Btw I've owned several BD bikes. The Motobecane geared bikes were 'ok' but I flat out loved my Messenger single speed. It was only 4130 steel but the frame rode really really well.
