You can mount the Junction box anywhere you want in the system, it doesn't have to even be accessible.
One place that is common is to mount it on the seat tube right by the FD..
All that is required is to connect the left shifter to the right shifter and then run a long wire from the right shifter into the internal junction box.
I plan to do this next time my bike needs new bar tape..
