Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Hitting the john when on a ride

This thought just occurred to me last night as I was placing the order for my Sportif, what do you guys do with your bike when youre on a ride and you have to go to the bathroom? Most road bikers I see dont carry locks on their bikes so do they just find somewhere off the beaten path and take their bike or what?

Im slightly paranoid and would be a little nervous leaving my bike out of my sight for any amount of time.

Most of my rides are rural, so I find a bridge on an empty road, that is for liquid deposit, solid deposits are done at home :-).

One little carry out I stop in sometimes I can run and grab something and keep an eye on the bike, and they are building a new building so they have a porta john next to the place.

My usual route has several places to stop that are bike friendly with small stand alone restrooms every 20mi, three bike shops, and one lone portapotty along the way so while I might leave the bike unattended long enough to relieve myself I thoroughly scan the area for anyone just lurking around before I enter and park the bike right by the door of the rest room. If I should need to be in there a while I'd probably bring the bike in the bathroom (not stall) which may result in some funny looks from people but I certainly couldn't replace my bike if it got stolen. Otherwise, if it's not a busy day out there I know of a few places to relieve myself quickly with decent cover.

I usually just try to dive in the bushes somewhere, find a tree, and thanks for the bridge suggestion....

Sonic bathroons. Accessible from the outside and large enough for the bike.

I lean it against a tree or fence or sign while I go squat in the ditch.

If I am out by myself, a cable lock is along for the ride. On group rides, we take turns watching.

I use a condom catheter with the drainage tube routed down my shorts to the seat stays where it discharges to the road by my rear skewer.

I think the John can be hit during a ride, but she'll charge extra for it.

Ride in wooded areas. Drag your bike into the woods with you.

Also, bring a few fast food napkins or some tissues with you when you ride. It might be useful for you, or you might have a chance to make a new friend if you offer it to someone else in a crisis situation.

I prop the bike against me as I pee off the side of the road, usually while waving at traffic.

Same here.

Or you could do as that other BF poster does and just pee in your shorts while riding.

I once had to take a dump using a port-a-potty on a park trail but I was too paranoid about leaving my pride and joy unattended so I kept the door for the potty open with my left hand extending outside holding my front wheel while my bike was leaned up against the potty. Since then I've learned the importance of consuming primarily liquid foods on rides (gels, carb mixes, etc) -- its just so much easier to take a leak.

If a #2 should occur while cycling, I abort. I don't wanna poo in the woods...too many mosquitoes.
