Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I didn't realize he was a serious cyclist until I read articles about and after his accident. I read he takes his bike with him on his overseas trips. He apparently gets in some dedicated bike time and that has to be difficult with his schedule. Politics aside I have to reevaluate some of my views of him. I read a news article where Jonathan V. said the guy is the real deal and can ride a bike. Armstrong said the same about Bush after riding mountain bikes with him.

He's had that orange Serotta frameset for a while. I remember that he rode it here in the Portland area when he was campaigning (vs. Bush) in 2004. Looks like a pretty large size.

Tried to find a site for the bike company and could not. Is Serotta not making bikes anymore?

Probably not the case you're talking about, but last year (?) there was an older guy (70s, I think, used to run marathons) who decided to hike to the top of a mountain in Oregon. He was slow due to his age, but brought camping gear to make the hike in two days. Onlookers decided he was moving too slowly and called for help. A helicopter was sent for him, he refused it. The guy had no need for a chopper and didn't ask for one, it would be crazy to think he should be responsible for the bill.

In WA, if you need to be rescued (even by helicopter) it's almost always free. Search and Rescue is mostly staffed with volunteers. SAR pays to fly their helicopter with donations.

Looks like they went through some "restructuring" in 2013, and haven't recovered.

I believe Serotta wound up shutting down completely. Great bikes, well-positioned as people seem more and more likely to spend ungodly amounts of money on their rides ... I think it was just mis-managed on the business side. Curious if anyone knows the inside story.

And yeah, I realize this is off-topic...

He is 6'4. I read that it's a custom built Ti frame. Headtube looks huge. When you print your own money you don't ride off the shelf frames. I do commend the fact that he found the one perfect bike and has kept it for years. Haven't seen pictures of him riding any N+ bikes.

My only question is he a Shimano or Campy man?

Hit a curb and broke his femur. He was near Scionzier, France riding a part of a Tour stage and it's not far from Geneva. It's in that part of SE France that's tucked under Switzerland.

FWIW...

He rides a Serotta, or did. Thinks getting fitted for a bike is a waste of money.

Biggest bone in your body. Imagine how Beloki felt when he fell and broke the top off of his femur.

Ended his career.

Howling in the ground, I'd say. Poor guy, Kerry. Beloki would have fainted? Probably not but maybe only for the adrenaline. Wow!

His wife's decesed husband's family is who printed his money (The Heinz ketchup heir). BTW, I know for a fact he also owns and has publically ridden a Steel Serotta, and a Cervelo Aero Carbon (not sure which one).

I heard he had hip replacement. Can see maybe the area at the head of the femur where the replacement is (I guess) cemented in might actually be stronger, but wonder if the bone just below where the joint is inserted might be weaker?

This didn't have to get political with Rush and the POTUS. We were actually holding the line pretty well for a few pages.

MOD NOTE: Political talk has been deleted. Again, the only place for political discussions is in the P&R forum. There is a zero tolerance for political talk anywhere else on the forum. Thanks.
