Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Heck yes! These yahoos need to stay out of the way and quit making real cyclists look bad.

Well, when it comes to bikes, I'm more of a traditionalist and older school. It took working in bike shops for years to become that way. I used to try and have all the coolest techy stuff, and then I got burned out because it just never ends and it is wearisome and I don't think most of it actually adds any joy to riding, unless you consider competition to be joy, which I don't. To me, di2 and eps is like Star Trek on a bike, and I never liked Star Trek. I guess I'm more the Grizzly Adam's kind.

I always notice what others are on. I'm a reformed gear head drag racer that owned a hot rod shop on the east coast and just kinda gravitated to bikes after moving back to tx and a knee injury killing my running etc. these are my new toys since I don't play with cars and drag bikes anymore. My mtb has the factory frame, every single part aside from that has been upgraded. My road bike stays stock because end of the year I plan to upgrade it but bikes are now my "man toy". So just like checking everyone else's car out at the drag strip, I love to check everyone else's bike out on the road or trail. Some are better, some are not, but I just like to look.

What it shows is that they don't think less of people because of their bikes. That is totally independent of being interested in the bikes themselves.

I always look at the other bikes. In group rides I'm usually the only one on a steel bike. I still haven't figured out why carbon bikes are so popular!
The only one I recently commented on to the rider was a titanium framed bike, I was envious!

I'm crushed that nearly 80% of the respondents don't care that I ride a 2012 Trek Madone, 58CM, H3 fit with a Brooks B17 Imperial saddle.

Crushed. Even though I'm one of the 80%.

I'm not sure I like the poll choices so I picked other. I like checking out other bikes. I don't care if they are more or less than my own. However, some types I'm just not that interested in like cruisers, tri, Walmart BSO's etc.

I like it when others have interesting bikes- i.e. not just some fancy bike that anyone can buy off the showroom floor if they plunk-down enough cash- but rather, bikes that are unusual- like bikes that were cobbled together from mismatched parts; or ones that have been repurposed in a unique way; customized; or ones that are just plain rare- even if they're not "good" bikes. Seeing someone on the latest & greatest run-of-the-mill cookie-cutter look-alike bike with all the latest features....does nothing for me. [And I have one such bike, myself]

So true.

However, I do notice what other people ride and occasionally get bike lust.

I would like to see one of those Time carbon saddles mated with a classy steel lugged touring frame like a Rivendell just for contrast purposes. Kinda the total opposite of yours.

Edit: I took the poll... It's not because I have no life...It's because I'm a bike mechanic for a living, and I've had to deal with a lot of people's wacky-ass bikes. All the veteran bike mechanics out there know exactly what I'm talkin' about.
What is wrong with a clean chain? My bike frames can get caked in mud, but I keep the drivetrains clean. Moving parts last longer if they are clean. Grit causes unnecessary wear and tear. I do judge people for having black, gunky chains.

I think what he meant was a the chain being squeaky as in loud, not clean. I've been on a few rides with guys who's bike is a noise making rattle trap and it drives me bat-crap crazy to have to listen to it for hours...

Correct, and if I were in the situation you described I would force lube their chain even if I had to have someone else hold them down while I got it done.

I'm a bit of an odd duck...I'll admit it. Things that really get me down on long rides isn't often my physical issues...it's ongoing "chinese water torture" type of things that get to me. A flapping, ill fitting jersey smacking my side 10,000 times, a constant clicking/ticking sounds of some sort, repetitive noises or sensations that just get to me.

A squeaky bike just drives me insane over time. The constant "squeak, squeak, squeak, squeak, squeak, squeak, squeak, squeak, squeak," of someone applying pressure to a noisy drive line...holy crap, it cuts me like a knife.

When I see someone on a Serotta, I immediately judge that they are a dentist, CPA, or Secretary of State.

Ah, I didn't realize that you meant it was literally sqeaky clean. That makes sense.

Yes. If I see someone riding a $7000.00 road bike, and they can't even climb an ant hill on it, total snob. But if I see someone riding a yard sale special, great! I really don't care, just pay your dues to ride on the front.
Cheers

A friend of mine was opined that male cyclists remember other male cyclists by what they ride. Women cyclists remember women cyclists by what they wear while riding.

Jealous? Filled with envy? Yes you are

Because they can afford it, why do they have to "pay their dues"?
