Your Weekend Ride Reports - June 6/7

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Your Weekend Ride Reports - June 6/7

Where did you ride this weekend? Or during the week?
Group ride? Solo ride?
Short ride? Long ride?
Indoor ride? Outdoor ride?
What about other sports?

Saturday -- Today Rowan and I cycled a metric century (100 km) ... on our Bike Friday Pocket Llamas (folding bikes).

We opted to do the ride out the cycleway to New Norfolk because the route was relatively, but not completely, flat ... and because it is winter here so we knew we could encounter bad weather, and the cycleway offers some shelter here and there.

The route started on the cycleway for its full length (to about 14 km) and then we were onto the road the rest of the way out to New Norfolk and a little bit beyond (to about 40 km). The road isn't too bad because it does have a shoulder most of the way, and although the traffic was fairly steady, they were, for the most part, pretty good too. Tasmania has a 1.5 metre rule, and most passed us outside 1.5 metres.

We had rain all the way out to New Norfolk ... mostly drizzle and light rain. But we knew there was a really good chance we'd be riding in the rain, so we dressed for it, and were reasonably comfortable. It did get annoying a couple times when it got a bit heavier ... and as we cycled out of New Norfolk on the way back, I was starting to get a little tired of it. However, fortunately there was next to no wind, and the temperature was decent. High about 14C.

In New Norfolk, we stopped for lunch at Banjos: Banjo's Bakery Café and had cauliflower and cheese pies + blueberry-apple danish.

After about 10 km on the way back ... just when I was starting to get a bit tired of the rain ... I noticed a little bit of sun trying to beam through the clouds, and a few minutes later, it started to shine. We only had sun for a few km, but at least the rain stopped!! We were able to dry out a bit.

So we cycled all the way back to the beginning, arriving there at the 80 km point of our ride. We grabbed a granola bar, and set off again, back up the cycleway 10 km, turn around and return. And it just started to mist again as we finished the ride.

That was the longest distance we have ridden on the folding bikes so far. It was kind of a test ride to see how we would go over that distance. We were reasonably comfortable. I was having a few back/right hip issues, but stretching seemed to help.

100.72 km in 6 hours 25 min 34 sec ... within Randonneuring time!! WooHoo!!
(Moving time was 5 hours 31 min 26 sec)

Today will be more of a rest day ... getting stuff done around the house, studying for a final exam. But the plan is to get out for a bit of a walk at some point.

I didn't take any photos on Saturday's ride ... too busy riding ... but here's a shot of them on another day, near home, at the beach where we walk in the evenings ...

I biked to work three times and put in a 43 mile ride today on the Portola Valley Loop: https://www.strava.com/activities/319899585. The weather was perfect for cycling. Tomorrow is hiking day.

Grocery run yesterday - about 4.4 miles total.

6 miles today.

Have to clean my house for a visitor, but hope to ride more afterwards. Longest ride so far was 23 miles the previous weekend. 3 weeks before that I didn't even know how to ride a bike.

Yesterday- 88 miles, 8,300', 14.4 mph ave. solo.

Dripping wet fog over the mountain, favorable winds a good part of the way, excellent slice of pizza at the bakery stop.

Signed up for a hard DC in two weeks- over 16K climbing. We'll see how it goes....

Got in another 20+. Might be time for a day off but the weather can be a crapshoot so if I can I get some form of ride in. Have not figured out the recovery ride concept but may I could force a nice easy ride.

Sunday - a 3.2 km walk to the beach (show in photo I posted above). Felt good to stretch the legs in a different way from cycling.

130 miles this weekend...10 with my road bike, the remainder with my new 29er on old logging roads. I suffered a spectacular header on the later hitting a hidden washout across the trail. No damage to the bike and fortunately I hit something soft like gravel, but the blood dried by the time I got to town for my gyro and Greek coffee.

Edit: Not the best picture, but this sight greeted me as I rounded a bend on one of those roads. Left to right, Mounts Rainier, St. Helens and Adams in Washington State.

This:

MOUNT GRETNA - East Earl, Penna

73 miles with 3,900' of climbing. Mostly through Amish and Mennonite country. Headwind both ways as a front came through, shifting the wind for the ride back from lunch. Saw a small herd of bison and a large Great Blue Heron, among other critters. Felt compelled to waive back to all the Amish and Mennonite folks on bikes, on foot and in buggies. Fresh strawberries from a roadside stand during the drive home.

85 solo miles on Saturday. My previous high was 52 miles. I averaged 15.6mph. I wish I could say I finished strong, but the last 5 miles I was dead on the bike. I was so wrecked when I stopped, I unclipped my left foot, but didn't realize my balance was off and the bike started to tip to the right. Luckily I had enough adrenaline to tear my right foot out and catch myself, or I would have face planted into a fence!

Monday (it's a long weekend here) ...

60 minutes on my bicycle on a trainer in our basement.

The weather here isn't brilliant - very windy and then the rain started mid-afternoon. Rowan was doing a lot of work with our basement as he continues to set things up as a storage room, workout room, workshop area, etc. And I am studying for a final exam.

So with all that on I grabbed an hour and did commercial intervals in a climate controlled environment.

Did 20.7 miles with a social group on Saturday, which was a lot of fun, and relaxing. Then did another 14.9 miles on my own on Sunday, where I could push myself a bit more. Set a few good PRs on Strava, which was nice affirmation of feeling stronger yesterday.

Anybody who can reach central Massachusetts in early June -- King's Tour of the Quabbin is held every year, it's a great ride.

Sat - solo rear tube went flat about 11km from home went to replace with a new tube and it exploded due to a pinch when I put the new tube in. Made the call to get my wife to come pick me up. In the meantime I attempted to find out where the leak was in the old tube someone stopped and helped me gave me their spare. Called wife to cancel the pick up and rode back home.

Sun - solo again was making good time so I extended my ride to 50km but that headwind was so draining the last 15km was brutal (plus I had to race home to take my daughter out for her classes) painful yesterday but looking forward to doing it again this weekend!

Saturday: After putting on the new Forte Softtail (road/touring) saddle bought at Performance Bike, and then lowering the seat tube and steering stem a hair (as per LBS), I tested out my "Craigslist Find" - my old '85 Fuji Del Rey 12 speed. I did 13 miles in a gentle 57:10. Great bike, built like a tank, and in surprisingly great condition for being 30 years old!
MapMyRide: 13 miles, 57:10, avg speed - 13.6 mph, calories burned - 996 (I'm 54, 6'0" and 208 lbs).

Sunday: I really considered going back out on the Fuji again, but decided to go running instead. I just did a quick 3.10 (5K) miles in my neighborhood before the temps got too hot. I did the 5K run in 27:25 at an 8:50 min/mile pace, and burned 616 calories.

Saturday: crazy route for group ride (47 miles)

Sunday: did my first charity ride on road bike. Ride for United Way in Decatur Illinois. I chose to ride the 60 mile option. I had one miscue with chain popping off on downshift on hill. Once I fixed it I was on my way and riding at good cruising pace. I rode with few older gentlemen and tried to help by doing my share of pulls. The second 30 miles was in brutal winds. No matter which way we turn the wind was either cross or head wind. My average speed showed I was doing 10-11 mph. Going take it easy on Monday's ride for recovery.

Wrapped up the last two days of helping guide the Central Oregon 500 over the weekend. 101 miles out to Prineville and Smith Rock on Saturday and then 129 over Santiam and McKenzie passes. We had beautiful weather for the weekend, nice weather for the whole event actually. If you're looking for a challenging and incredibly well supported mini tour definitely check it out. I'll probably do a full write up of it once I get some more of the pictures... I completely failed on taking any of my own.

Congrats!! Even though the last 5 miles were tough. Next time you do it, it should be a little bit better.
