Shimano 6500 compatibility with 6600 / 6700
Hey there,
so, I own a bike with a full Shimano 6500 Group, stuffs working fine but the shifters look somewhat worn. Hoods, as many around the world have noticed painfully, are literally not available.
So, 6500 is 9 speed, I know that. Yet winds whisper that the entire group is working excellently with 10-speed shifters like ST 6603 / 6703 (yea, 3 speed crankset :>) and the appropriate 10 speed cassette + chain.
Can anyone confirm that?
Regards

The brake caliper cable pull is slightly different on the 6703 STIs. Probably not enough to really notice, but 6603 might be your best choice (less shifting friction too).

Yes, it'll work fine with 6703 -- but I understand that 6603 would work just a hair better.

If you want, a 4603 group could be a cheap way to freshen up everything. Or hold on a few months for 4700.
Most combo's should be fine. Calipers, cranksets, and derailleurs 'generally' don't care what speed the shifters are (within a reasonable range) and will work okay. 6603 shifters (with 10 speed cassette+chain) would drive an otherwise 6503 group just fine.
