Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I know my limits and replacing front brake pads and rotors is beyond my abilities.

I did think about duct tape for the muffler, though.

It's been incredibly reliable for 17 years. But now a hole in the muffler and need for new front brakes (pads + rotors) means a $500-600 repair bill. I am willing to consider this, but my wife is saying it's time to put the old gal on hospice. Luckily it drives ok (other than the muffler noise which is a nuisance but tolerable for now) so we don't have to make a rushed decision.
i know that feel.

i had a saturn i inherited years ago that gave me nothing but trouble. tranny replaced twice (warrantied), ingnition replaced half a dozen times

now i have a focus thats getting really long in the tooth and i think this is its last year before i send it to the farm. leaking oil, needs tires, suspension, power wire harness, power window motor, the list goes on. i really dont want it anymore so i would happily drive it till it falls apart blues brothers style, but its worth less than the tow to a junkyard. gotta dump it before it completely conks out, probably before winter really hits

+1 on doing your own brakes though, all you need is a jack, lugnut wrench and maybe a hammer to free the rotors and about half an hour. super easy. if youve ever adjusted a derailleur before youve done more technical wrenching.

Yeah. It's only brakes. Not really important if they work when you're done.

I thought my ex was crazy when she wanted me to look into doing the rings on her olde Saturn. Luckily I managed to put that job off until we split up ...

I did put new front rotors and pads on it, though. For a sec I thought that was the last car I did brakes on, but then I remembered I did pads on all 4 wheels and rotors in the rear on a Lincoln Mark VII LSC. It was pretty crazy. Had to get this weird Pandora's Box kinda tool for that one.

I got rid of my Volvo 240 wagon with 250k, not because it was worn out, but because I was tired of it and it and the random failures of various things.

I miss it now. Only two cars I've owned that I miss, the Volvo and a '70 VW camper.

My ex's burned almost as much oil as gas, before hitting 100k.

I really miss my 1977 VW non-camper type-II. Gotta get me another some day. 60s action would be nice.

There is a Pinzgauer up the road I'm tempted to make an offer on, however.

I had my fill of trying to keep sad old cars going when I was poor. I don't miss scrounging junk yards, being stranded on a roadside, or trying to find a trustworthy mechanic.

Yeah, part of the fun of owning them was keeping them on the road, but as I've gotten older I like spending my time on other things...

so going to put this back on the road soon.

Nk. Old junkers are cheap if you don't mind repairs at random intervals, and usually as night's falling in the middle of nowhere.

Or on I-95 during rush hour on the way to work with three annoyed carpoolers.
