Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Mr. Mercedes and Finders Keepers is turning into a decent series. I wasn't thrilled with the ending of Finders Keepers, but I have a feeling Mr. King is setting us up for a far better book this next go-round.

How is the riding out in Galena? Always figured there would be some beautiful roads and nice climbs, but never have ventured there myself

^^^ good to hear, I'll keep it in mind.

On the biking-related front: in the spring, the boy was a little intimidated by his balance bike and just wanted to stick with his tricycle. I revisited it last week and was able to convince him to give it another go. In short, he's fallen in love with it. He takes pride in getting faster and going farther without his feet touching down and now he's manufacturing reasons to take it out: to go to the farmers market, to accompany me on dog walks, to visit his friends, etc. It's pretty great.

I finally went out and picked up some Prilosec (generic) and started on a round of that last night. Nothing else ever seems to touch my heartburn at all. Of course it takes like 12 hours to start working so I spent the night unable to lay on my side or front and had to resort to laying on my back which doesn't work for me. On the plus side I am no longer in any pain today! I'm just weak and tired with a slightly upset stomach.
Glad you are better but based on above it deserves to be checked.

Probably, but I'm without insurance right now. I have a history of GERD so it's not exactly undiagnosed. A few weeks of Prilosec will knock it down and then I'll be fine for many months. Unless my gall bladder grew back...

While my prescription meds do manage my reflux disease/heartburn pretty well, I do have an occasional flare up. I believed for years that a fancy antacid brand like Gaviscon was necessary. It foams and coats and protects the esophagus. Trouble is I can only take so much of it before the high magnesium content gives me the runs.

I finally tried some Ultra-Ultra-Strength Tums or Walgreen's house equivalent, the 1000 mg size. They are all calcium so I can take as many as I need. I will pop three or four of those and be good for quite a while. It is not a substitute for Nexium, but I really helps when things get out of hand.

Also did you know you can take the other kind of acid reducer like Pepcid along with the Nexium/Prilosec/Prevacid type?. That two mechanism attack on the problem can also be very helpful.

And finally I find that the most frequent cause of heartburn problems for me is postural, not lying down as some think, but scrunching on a sofa or chair with my back and and torso bent right at the diaphragm while I watch TV. Often all I have to do to avoid the problem is get up and walk around for a little while, then sit up straight.

Tums and Rolaids don't seem to do anything for me. Really I should give up the coffee, beer, and spicy foods, but then what would the point of living be?

Funny, but foods that I eat have never made a difference to my GERD and heartburn. As my gastro-guy says, "It's not what you're eating, it's what's eating you." YMMV

There are a few foods that I simply can't eat without heartburn. I wouldn't say that coffee, beer, and spicy food give me heartburn, but they sure don't agree with me if I already have heartburn.

There's also a chance that I don't have acid reflux but bile reflux so while my symptoms and causes might be similar they wouldn't be exactly the same.

The riding is great if you like hills. My wife and I had around 4500' in 60 miles and we tried to avoid as many as possible.

Seriously, very scenic roads in good shape, lots of hills, historical town. Worth it if you need a few days of riding and want to enjoy some history while you are at it.

Only one thing really sets me off and gets around my stomach pill and that's donuts. One lard laden cake donut and I'm in trouble.

I am lucky. Never had heartburn or reflux.

I do take TUMS on very long rides (say >65 miles) to prevent cramps, though....

I've been seeing a lot of those two front one back motorcycles the last few years and I wonder if they call themselves trikers.

If I HAD to I could eliminate the beer. I only crave it watching football. Substitute wine instead. The other two are non negotiable.

Not sure about tums, but I find that things with high potassium (clif bar, lara bar, etc) help a lot to prevent cramping.
