Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Still a hassle, unless LBS dude drops by my place and does the work.

Preferably within half hour of my calling them and maybe they could bring a pizza, too

Too bad you're not in Chicago. Pedal To The People - Chicago's Premiere Mobile Bicycle Repair Shop I don't know if he does pizza delivery though.

Yes, I know and that is actually what I intend to do. But the question was "when?"

But nevermind because I have since asked the same question of one of my trusted cycling advisors. The wear indicator is going to be a pretty conservative predictor of when the tires should be swapped out. You can certainly go well past the point of the wear indicator being gone if the tire seems to be in pretty good shape. You should replace the tire sometime after the wear indicator is gone but before the tire fails, where exactly in that range is something of a judgment call.

I usually keep a pretty close watch for any embedded glass or other debris, especially when it gets down to the wear indicators. If I've had no flats, I'll keep a close watch for the first appearance of threads, then it gets changed pronto. Both my tires are getting very close for replacement and I always look forward to that feeling of fresh rubber.

Congrats on bike #4

Correct. It's not a hassle at all on my rims. Newer tubeless rims, have a deep center section that facilitates tire changes by letting the beads drop down in to the center section thus reducing the rim circumference when changing tires. Somebody should have thought of that a long time ago.

The tubeless-for-tubeless swap was on Easton EA90 SL rims with Specialized Roubaix Road Tubeless tires. Mounting was not too difficult.

Unless you get silicone on your hands. Makes it harder to roll that last few inches of bead over the rim.

I was going to say this could be an interesting business model. My neighbor gets his car fixed by a mobile mechanic, mobile bike mechanics seem completely logical.

There are at least a couple around here. Some drive vans around, some down in Portland ride a bike and trailer around.

Oh, I have decide, yes (though my boss talked to me today to see if a project switch would keep me around) - I'm just waiting until AG gets settled into her new job, and can get us insurance, before I leave. It means I won't even start looking for a month, and in the meantime, the project I'm on has gone from yellow to red to "a color beyond time and space that humans can't understand". Fun times.

So much for my ride today...About five minutes prior to my departure Father In Law, 93, decided to do something he shouldn't, of course against repeated advise not to, and he managed to lose his balance and lacerate his forearm.

It was an episode of Archie & Meathead go to the ER.

32 stitches. Capo dost. Testa dura.

I am not sure about the logic of riding long distances with a tyre that is down to the wear indicators. Fresh rubber is the norm for me when setting off on a randonnee over 300km or a tour longer than a weekend if the tyres are that low.

I also have never carried a spare tyre with me.

The logic in this case is that I have no rides planned in the near future that are much over 50 miles. Well, maybe a little more tomorrow. The tires are expensive. I'd like them to last as long as possible.

Tomorrow I was planning on heading east to scout a TT course that I'm going to be riding in the fall. Then afterward, I was going to take the MB on a nice jaunt up in the mountains, a really beautiful route that I put together for the momentous occasion of MBs 10,000th mile. These two rides were to be in the vicinity of the Cajon Pass, which is currently on fire. It's confusing, but I think the fire started on the 15 freeway and then spread to the adjacent hills. Multiple vehicles have burned, a "multiple causality event" and there is a 2000 acre wildfire as a result. Lots of resources focused of course on getting the vehicle fires out and getting to people who were trapped in their cars, so I'm not sure how quickly they'll get the wildfire out. Not looking like my ride is going to happen. Good news is that there's a chance of rain tomorrow around there.

So not sure what I'm going to do tomorrow. Some friends are riding at the coast, I could do that. One of my Nightcrawler friends is doing a nice ride locally too. And there's an epic climbfest I could do in a similar area to where I rode last week. Hmm.

I am sorry, but the logic here continues to escape me. Are tubeless tyres worth the high cost if you feel that you have to ride beyond the wear indicators?

If I do any sort of high-speed descending, and where I live, there is a good chance of that on every ride, I want to know that the tyres under me aren't edging closer ever more rapidly to blow-out condition.

I've also done the trick of putting the front tyre on the rear. But I found that only meant I had to replace the rear tyre quicker than if I had put on a fresh, new tyre.

And aren't you about the lay down thousands for a new TT bike? Maybe you should spend some of that one new back-up sets of tyres for the other bikes you already have.
