I planned for a 100+ mile ride today, gravel thought other wise.
I was riding on a new road (for me), and with some hills and curves. Started going down hill, out of nowhere a blind corner came, hit the brakes pretty hard and started to turn right. I wasn't going crazy fast, and easily should have made the turn. The turn then switched back to a left hand turn, the slope dropped to a 10+ gradient. Going through the turn the bike slid out from under me, and I went from nearly 25mph to 0 quickly. I looked down to see ripped cycling shorts with a softball sized road rash on my hip, and a very bloody forearm. My helmet never touched the ground, no abrasions or impact. Then I went over to to see the bike on the ground, the handle bars got out of alignment (maybe absorbed some impact)? The derailleur hanger got completely snapped, but I am very glad to see that the frame never even touched the ground. Wheels look alright, so I think I got pretty lucky.
Nasty 1/3 inch rock was stuck in my arm, took 5 minutes to dig out. Fun.
Waited about 25 minutes for a ride to the hospital, had a nice person pull over to see if I was okay. Got some treatment, and I am feeling a ton better. Looks like I will be off the bike for a little while.

Especially the big rock embedded into your body part. Hey, it's been almost 10 years since I've had to dig a rock out of myself. Guess I'm about due.

You may remember my posting about an illness that is keeping me from riding. Well the expected (from past experience) full-blown syndrome developed, and it has been a doozy. Into its fourth week now, and I am only just starting to believe I am over the hump. To review, this thing starts with night sweats, then morphs into an apparent case of acute bacterial prostatitis with pelvic pain, frequent and painful urination, chills and fever that seems to respond rapidly to antibiotic therapy. All's well for a couple of days, then it's obvious the febrile symptoms aren't going away. The prostate symptoms go away, but are replaced by both muscle and joint pain particularly in the calves and knees. And a tender and painful scalp and occasional headache. All episodic with one to three days between "attacks" and just extreme fatigue, agiration, and malaise in between. Everything is worse after about 4 PM every day. It also becomes obvious from urine testing that there is no sign of bacterial invovement. Almost four weeks into this thing and extensive blood work including cultures shows everything "normal". No mononucleosis. No malaria. My internist says it is most likely just a "viral syndrome" and suggests waiting a while before starting "body imaging" to learn more. Somebody else must have experienced this before me. Can it really have no name?
The various pains are at about 1/3 of max. intensity now, and I haven't had chills in a couple of days. The sweats continue. Mrs. rpen is getting a little testy about me going through three sets of night clothes every night, and I can't blame her. But at least things are looking up a little. Going on four weeks with no exercise. Worst thing is we are in Napa tasting wine for three days before heading to Lake Tahoe for a month. I'm just trying to keep up.
One funny thing though that makes me question my choice of physicians: after I asked him about the test results and complained of being miserable with pain, he recommended I take one, regular-strength acetaminophen every 4-6 hours. WUT? This disease laughs off 4 ibuprofens, 2 naproxens, or even 2 Tramadols. One acetaminophen is a joke. I'm beginning to think he is trying to ditch me because I'm on Medicare. Maybe the illness has just affected my reasoning...but still, one acetaminophen!
If anyone has ever heard of such an illness, by all means let me know about it.

I'm surprised at how many undiagnosed/undiagnosable stuff I hear about. I thought I was living in the future with my pocket super computer, drones flying all around and stuff.

i have an on again / off again hip "thing" that varies from annoying pangs to excruciating completely immobilizing bone:bone style pain that feels like someones digging around my pelvic socket with a switchblade any time i attempt to move. in the latter stages i literally cannot get out of bed in the morning or so much as turn over in bed. and im not even "old", ill be 30 next year.
i spent more than a year going to different doctors and specialists every weekend, literally not a single one could tell me anything relating to my pain, what causes it, what it even is, or any treatment short of "take 600mb of ibuprofen" (which generally actually works, [to make the pain less, not completely abolish it]but im really not a fan of taking pills)
eventually i gave up on practical medicine and it mostly went away, i came across someone at work who was describing the identical issues i had to another coworker of ours. he said he had went to many doctors and specialists too, only one eventually told him that it was caused by crossing his legs in work/class. he ended up changing his behavior and going through 9 months of PT to cure it.
after that i stopped crossing my legs when idle and it nearly never bothers me now, but it makes me wonder how many more "second opinions" i wouldve had to go through for that diagnosis.

I was looking at my old frame and other components, since I am home stuck for a little while.
Frame + fork + headset/bottom bracket + seat post + seat + hanger/cable guides/fd clamp = 1.6kg
I am going to put it up on the wall in my room, don't think I will get over $200 for the old frame.
