Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Indoor trainer for Trek Domane

For those who ride a Trek Domane, what brand/model of indoor trainer do you have? I recently got a new Trek Domane 4.5 and my old trainer, a Travel Trac from Performance, doesn't fit. The dropouts on the Domane are so far recessed that the cup on the non drive-side of the trainer contacts the seat-stay rather than fitting snug against the head of the skewer. Instead of a nice even load on the skewer I'm getting a point-load on the seat-stay and I don't think that's good for the bike. What kind of trainer are y'all using with the Domane?

Get a trainer skewer.

Sorry to sorta hijack, but are you guys happy with your Kickr's? Sold my truck today and am planning to pick up a Kickr from the LBS when I visit next week.

Very happy with mine. I got it from a local gym/spin studio that was going out of business last year so I paid $450 for it.

I wouldn't go so far as to say it's required for Zwift but smart trainers definitely enhance my time playing/riding. Normally I'd say try to find one used but even used they're fetching 85% of MSRP.

I had no idea that [Zwift] was a thing. That is going to make my winter riding soooo much more entertaining. Thanks for mentioning it!

Very happy with mine. Several good apps out there to help reduce the boredom that a trainer provides.. Zwift is a good one along with trainer road and Virtual Training.

I know this post is old but I have a Domane 4.3 and just purchase an Ascent trainer from Nashbar. It is the same as the Travel Trac from perfromance. You are correct about the dropouts. Even with the provided skewer that came with the trainer it doesnt fit properly. It hits the frame. I do not have this issue with my Trek 2.1.

Is this what your dropout looks like?

I have a traveltrac comp fluid that I use with my Madone without issue (with their included steel skewer), but I can see how that overhang above the dropout on the frame in the picture would interfere with the mounting.

It seems silly to get an entirely new trainer just for this reason, though. Maybe you can put a nut between the end cap and the dropout so the skewer sticks out further on the drive side? It'd need to have some sort of textured surface so it would get a good lock on the dropout, though. Maybe use a dremel (or lasers!!) to slice another end cap in half and double them up?

My dropout looks almost identical. I'm surprised I can't fit it if you can. Maybe it's just enough difference that I can't make it. It's really close to fitting on my frame but would definitely dig into the edge of the dropout. For me the issue is on the non-drive side because the mount on the trainer is larger on that side. I can upload a picture later tonight to show it.

That's a Domane in the picture I posted, I was just asking if yours looks like that to get an idea of what you're dealing with, the chainstay on my Madone is very different and doesn't stick out very much.

LOL that would explain why it looks so similar, now I feel like pretty dumb.

Both my wife's 4.5 and my 6.9 fit in a Cycleops Fluid 2 when using the trainer specific metal skewer, but the pivot arm on the skewer needs to be positioned just right, or it gouges the frame and doesn't close all the way.

Emonda's the same way. The wide slot has to be almost perfectly aligned to the closes part of that overhang and the QR lever rotated to match.

I haven't had the frame gouged, but there is a little paint scuff from before I figured out how to get it to not get wedged onto the trainer.

I've purchased a new metal cup/cone designed for a Kurt Kinetic trainer. As long as the size of the bolt hole is close it should just screw on. Otherwise I'll just machine down the original cup.

For those that are having the same issue. I put the cone I bought from Kurt Kinetic on my Ascent trainer. It is a little loose when it's bolted on with no bike but everything tightens up perfectly fine with the bike in the trainer. It clears the dropouts with plenty of room for my Domane. It only cost $10 on Amazon or Kurt Kinetics website. The pictures show the gap that it has with no bike but how it tightens against the threads where it should sit with the bike in the trainer. I could/might get a nut or washer to put in between at some point but honestly it's unnecessary as I get no movement using it this way right now.

Is this the one you bought? I just received my Ascent Trainer yesterday and have the same issue with my Domane.

Thanks for the help.

Kickr works great with the Domane 4.5...KK Roadmachine also worked great before the Kickr.

This is the one that I purchased: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1
The bottom picture matches the one in the link that you sent but the one that I received looks like the cone in the top picture.
