Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

LensCrafters will have Oakley make the lenses.

Oakley and LensCrafters are both owned by Luxotica

Oakley has to make all the prescription sunglass lenses. The only time you get the local labs lenses is when you just buy the frames for you standard eyeglasses.

well now i dont know any more because my prescription is to high so they cant make me a pair so i will have to find an alternative. i think they use polycarbonate which is light and strong if that helps any .

You might be able to have lenses made for your frames by someone other than Oakley, but Oakley voids the warranty on the frame if you use non-Oakley lenses. I'm not sure how they can prove that non-Oakley lenses were used, but that is their policy.

Rx inserts are small and prevent long and low position.
After much experimentation I recommend bolting prescription lenses to the front of sunglasses or PC glasses. It works well for me except for looking very dorky.

Get an optician to makes some blanks like the below, drill holes, and bolt them to any frameless glasses.

Everyone, especially Cavendish, should have them:-)

most people have no need for them because they have a more sensible riding position, and those that use an aggressive position are more flexible than a 2x4.

FWIW, SportRX just replaced my prescription lenses free of charge (Rudy Arpoon half frame) following a crash. Great service and an unbeatable warranty. The lenses also helped save me from more serious injury when I did a face plant at 22 mph.

I got the serengeti prescription sun glasses at Costco. Love em... Used to have the Bolle glasses with the prescription inserts. They were kinda bulky, but that's 1993 tech...

I went the Walmart route for my cycling sunglasses. Been a few years now, but I think they came in under $150.

RP can handle a wider range of prescriptions because of their design that uses an insert. IMO, their design can cause some distortion and fogging issues, but if Oakley can't build a lens for you, it's a very good second choice.

Rudy Project makes a very good product, and their lens replacement policy is the best in the industry. Their frames are not as durable as Oakley's, but I've never broken one in normal use(only when a friend sat on them).

If I didn't work for the big O, I wouldn't hesitate to use RP eyewear.

OP
I have used RX Safety for several pairs of wrap around safety glasses for cycling, and have found them to be excellent. Also, each frame will tell you what level of RX they can handle, and they can deal with more than Oakley can (at least when I was asking questions at a LensCrappers store).

Prescription Safety Glasses | Prescription Safety Eyewear | Bifocal Safety Glasses | Rx Safety

The latest pair that I bought uses a Transitions lens that is variable polarization as well as tint (Vantage, IIRC), a basic black plastic frame, single vision polycarbonate lens and they were around $170. I have been very happy with them.

Thanks for the info but rudy project was able to make me pair in my prescription looks like rudy will do almost any prescription depending on the frame or how bad your prescription is.

I'm sure you'll be very happy with your RP eyewear. They make a very good product, and being able to change the primary lens(and use the same RX insert is a fantastic bonus. For some conditions the insert system is a problem, but it's also a huge bonus for others.

I hope it's a benefit for you.

You misspeak.

However flexible you are, it helps to "really get the head out of the way,"

I.e. the 21 second point in this video
.be&t=21sYou can't get your head *down* if you are craning up to see through the usual tiny RX inserts.

This aliexpress seller has agreed to sell bolt-on-the-front R-"exerts" in the size shown above for 13USD a pair. I have ordered two pairs for 25.5 USD via this product page (stipulating 3 of the product).

I will drill them and bolt them to a couple of pairs of glasses so I can be dorky, and fast, in all sorts of different ways.

Ah, you would be surprised. Thanks to you and everyone's kind advice, I have levelled my saddle and use my drops big time -- thank you -- but that is beside the point.

It is physically impossible to get your head down, and see forward, with the normal small RX inserts in cycling glasses, and even goggles get in the way. Look at photos of Mr "Souplesse" Jacques Anquetil when he is putting pedal to metal, he is looking out the top of his brows which you can not do, and see, if your prescription inserts do not reach up further than your brows, or there is a plastic rim in the way. Dork glasses are, therefore, the future.

I use Rudy Project for two reasons:

1. I can change lenses whenever I want and keep my prescription.
2. I had two different types of Oakley prescription glasses. Fashion type, not sport type. Frameless. Both cracked, twice. I gave up on Oakley.

Another one here for Rudy Project. My optometrist deals with them so it was an easy purchase (and extended health insurance covered most of the cost).

Had mine over a year, no problems at all. In fact they fell off my collar once when i was leaving work, and I stepped on them. Thought I'd wrecked them, but the lens had just popped out. Snapped it back in, the lens wasn't even scratched.

I wear mine running, as well. Can't say enough good things about them.

Rudy Project cost from about $250 plus prescription inserts which puts them above 300USD, despite the fact that the inserts are small.
Basecamp frameless
plus bolt on tall ex-serts (i.e. oblong blanks) can be had for a total of 30USD. Ex-serts can be purchased for 13 USD per pair from this seller ("Zach Zheng" - on order). One could also bolt 13USD prescription blanks onto the front of these sports glasses (ordered for $1.2) for a total of $15. That is 5% of the price of the Rudy's for something that may be more functional. I live in hope that one day someone else tries them

That's your problem.

You have the flexibility of a 2x4, and are unable to keep your head up. Most riders that use an aggressive position like that, have far better flexibility than you, and have no problem keeping their head up.
