Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Mercian Serpens LTD 20

Very excited. Bought this tonight for my wife.

It looks like it has full Ultegra 6600 (including crankset), but the seller probably transferred the Ultegra calipers to his new bike. He upgraded the brifters to Dura-Ace. Still has the 3T seat post and stem, though only one of the Shimano wheel survived.

From the link it looked to be a 2006 bike:
Road Bikes, Roadbikes - 2006 Mercier Serpens LTD 20

My wife only has a Libertas vintage mixte 5-speed, and a Schwinn suburban mixte 10-speed now. The only "road" bike she rides would be our tandem (which is essentially never).

Hoping this will fit her. Worried about the top tube length.

Does anyone here have experience with this Mercian and the carbon rear stays? I like my Cannondale's because they accelerate like rocket bikes. Does the carbon fork and carbon rear stay eliminate the "rocket bike" feel on this Mercier? Would anyone who has had one of these share their experiences, thoughts, and review of it? I'm not sure that double crank is going to work for her.

Mercian is a British maker of bespoke steel bicycles. That is a "Mercier". Mercier was a French bicycle company that no longer exists. The name was bought by an American company which uses it to sell generic Taiwanese bikes.

I'm puzzled why you wouldn't take your wife to see the bike for her approval and check out the fit. You're very excited. Will she be?

It's a very nice bike indeed. It came from BikesDirect.com. That Columbus Zonal frame is pretty nice and was sold under a number brand names, including Bottecchia. I bought a similar one in 07 and still ride it regularly.

You can always get a zero setback seatpost and shorter stem if need be, but it won't do her any good if it is still too big. You can also move the parts over to a smaller frame. Nice used steel and aluminum frames can be bought cheap on Ebay.

That's not 6600. Derailleurs might be; but I don't think anything else is based on that photo. STI's are probably 9-speed DA.

The crank seems to be Octalink. If it's Ultegra, probably 6500. Is it all 9 speed?
