Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Helmet...should have asked here first but...

...I needed one asap. And, there was a sale. My son asked me if I had a bike he could borrow. He's 32 and grew up riding BMX and MB but discovered motorcycles and got into racing. Now he needs some exercise to enhance his health. I'm pretty much a roadie but I do have a cross bike. So, he wants to borrow it to get started. So, I got it all prepped for him...threw in some MB shoes, gloves, a floor pump, etc. But, I didn't have another helmet and I've been jonesin' for a new one. So, on impulse I bought a Giro Prolight for $99.95. It hasn't arrived yet but I'm wondering if there are things I should know about it. Any Prolight users here?

The locking mechanism goes in the rear. I still see too many people wearing even newer helmets backwards.

It should have. Its the plastic thing hanging down from the back with two plastic supports going to each side. I replaced the locking mechanism on my older Giro Atmos. For the Prolight, its the Roc Loc 4: Let me google that for you

Again, my Prolight didn't come with one.

Ok, yours looks like the newer Roc Loc SL with some sort of elastic webbing. I haven't dealt with it yet. ;-) I wonder how well that works versus the Roc Loc 4...

Guess you will have to find some other way to make sure he doesn't wear it backwards.

Every name brand helmet will do the safety job. Beyond that it is all about weight, ventilation, and style. Quite serviceable helmets can be had for less than $50. Sounds to me like you got a good deal on an upscale model from a top brand. What's not to like?

I'm not sure if things have changed, but basically the more expensive a helmet was really just meant it had more vents and was usually a bit lighter. if that's not a huge deal to him, you honestly could have gotten him an inexpensive LG road helmet for about $50 if money was an issue, and still been fine...

Oh, no. He's getting my helmet and the Prolight is mine. I was just wondering if things like the retention system were better/worse than most. As someone said it looks like it's "what's not to like." Thanks.

Helmet just showed up at my house today. Haven't ridden with it but tried it on and it's pretty nice. I'm impressed.
