Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Perineum pain and body hair

So the other day I did a long ride, and basically my perineum was killing me the whole time (from start to finish). Afterwards I discovered a bunch of hairs from that area had somehow been pulled out.

So I'm starting to think that maybe my chronic discomfort in the saddle might have to do more with hairs being pulled, or hairs abrading my skin than anything else (it feels like riding on fine sand...or pine needles...well, that's an exaggeration, of course.).

Has anyone had a similar issue? I found another post stating an almost identical problem to me, and claiming that removing hair from the area solved the problem.

Yet I see several other posts strongly advising against shaving that area.

For the record, I DO use a high-end chamois and chamois cream.

Under no circumstance do you want to shave that area. You may instead choose to have it waxed. That would be a much longer lasting solution and also one that wouldn't lead to added problems during regrowth.

I've been shaving down there for years, as in more than a decade; I don't really remember since when exactly. No problems, anyway.

More often than using a razor to get really close, though, I just keep things trimmed short with a #1 guard on electric hair clippers, and that works just fine for me, too.

I do notice some discomfort when it starts getting a little too bushy, so trimming is a welcome habit.

Get a saddle with a central channel cutout like one of the Selle SMP models.

SO, in short, you think the discomfort is to do with a signif. amount of hairs from your a-hole getting ripped out during rides?

I mean, to me, there's a huge difference in the way perennial pain from an ill-fitting saddle feels and the pain I get from having body hair ripped out...there's like a very distinct difference.... if it's coming from hair somehow being ripped out during a ride, which, I have no idea, how, like, that would work from a physiological standpoint, esp. if you're wearing bike shorts or bibs, then I guess, yeah, try trimming or shaving the area down and see if you notice a difference... I am not really that hairy in that area, and have never experienced this type of problem... but I guess shaving wouldn't hurt.... I'd be careful shaving in that area though.... and I wouldn't use a dull razor....

I have been riding long enough that the saddle should not bother me that much... and I don't get saddle sores. Yet my ass still hurts for some reason or another.

I find that removing hair from certain places causes discomfort in some cases (at least when freshly cut, or when it starts to grow out again), but having too much can cause discomfort in others.

Hair provides a sort of self-lubricating function between skin, but in the case of a chamois you don't want it to move at all because this causes friction.

I ask, rhetorically: you examine the interior of your shorts after you ride?

I tried it yesterday with strips... wasn't that bad. I had already got most of the hairs already though so it didn't do that much good.

I bet an epilator is pretty horrible though.
