At what point did you decide not to be a billboard?

The point at which I decided not to be a billboard happened was when I bought my very first jersey. I never liked the idea of me advertising anything without being paid to do so. And that's not gonna happen, not for me as a cyclist anyway. All of my jerseys, save one, have minimal or no graphics. The one I bought one from the club to which I belong, I bought mainly to support the club. And I rarely wear that jersey because I don't particularly like the fit.

Oh, stop. If you're going to go with the car analogy, typical car branding is more along the line of Rapha, whereas the "billboard" jerseys that most are discussing aren't far off from a NASCAR ride. Very different levels of branding/advertisement.

I don't like being a billboard at all - I really hate it. I don't like on my jerseys or any of my clothing, I will look for stuff that has the minimal amount of corporate writing on it. I tolerate a corp logo but I crank about it all the time. Also I don't like it on the cars I drive too. I especially don't like the freakin dealer's placard on the car. I'm actually very happy with my bike now that I've repainted the frame - no decals at all.

An old friend was the same way. One of the first things that he did, upon buying a used Audi, was to remove the dealer badge, model designation, etc. Basically everything except the quadruple rings. I have to say, it did look way better.

It better be no cost. Can you imagine a manufacturer charging more to include less?
Oh, wait... That's basically the idea with the GT3 RS. Delete a bunch of stuff to make it light, through on splashy graphics, and charge a lot more for it.

I won't wear anything with logo's unless I'm getting paid to. Not just cycling either. I'm not talking about tags, actual logos advertising on T-shirts... Can't do it.

You might be onto something.. is there a direct inverse correlation between the size of a manufacturer's logo on a jersey and the selling price? Are the more nondescript logo'd jersey higher cost than options that have more blatant logo designs?

There does seem to be. You can get plain jersey's/shorts for about half price. Even our local shop's kits are pretty pricey.

Thinking that you are an advertisment is quite self absorbed isn't it?
If I see you riding with a logo on, what is so special about you that would make me want one too?

With the GT3RS, you do get an extra 25hp, wider tires, a bunch of carbon fiber, and magnesium, and 700 lbs of downforce.
And heck its still cheaper than the turbo.

So for all of you non-billboards out there:
If someone riding with you likes your unadorned jersey, compliments you on it, and asks who made it, do you refuse to tell them?

I have lot's of "cool" jerseys. Some from clubs, some clubs that I've never even heard of. But recently I've really enjoyed the look of a nice, plain good fitting jersey with no logos, names, clubs, companies, etc... on it with just plain black shorts. I recently arrived at my mid-40's. Is this just "one of those things" or am I sharing this experience with many others here?
But yeah, I dunno if it's a mid-40s thing, or 'maturing' as a rider, or what.
Now, if someone has the sense of humor to roll out in a USPS kit, I'd

When I'm travelling, I like to visit a LBS and get one of their jerseys as a "wearable souvenir." Makes things interesting when I'm riding in Southern California and wearing a jersey from a shop in Seattle, Portland, Las Vegas or New Orleans.

I don't care for the jerseys that advertise companies - but it depends on the company. I'd wear one that supports a local small shop, or my friend's business, but i won't wear one that says pearl izumi, or a bike brand, blazoned across the whole thing. It's tacky, and honestly, looks horrible aesthetically.
This is my go to outfit for t-shirt rides (i don't do club rides 'cause i'm not hardcore..........or fast enough)

Our Club took ALL sponsors off the jersey completely. Our brand is the Wolverine Sports Club. Established in 1888, we are one of the - if not the - oldest in the country. (Most of our original members are dead now.)
We used to have separate cx, mtb, track, skate, ski, road club and elite contingents - each had their own identity. We threw that garbage out the window and created one identity for all 300+ members of the club. You're either a Wolverine, or you're not. Get over it.
We have sponsors, but they're smart enough to know that being on the kit isn't as powerful as being mentioned in our social media. So why clutter the kit? Less is more.
So far, tons of compliments. Only one or two people who don't get it.
We also went with solid red instead of the over-popular black, and we removed all the clutter. It's just red. This makes us stand out in the peloton AND on the open road. When you add a million little elements to the design, you create camouflage. That doesn't work for us.
