Triathletes, why so grim?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I don't know why, but many triathletes show their war face while riding.

He leaves them on because he would otherwise have to retape his bars and remove the brake levers everytime he took them off. I see no issues with such a person riding in a group as long as they are safe (which includes staying off the aero bars unless pulling), smooth, and predictable.
My road bike is my tri bike and I keep the aero bars on all the time. While in the aero position I wave or nod my head to others.

My painful expression is due to problems from a broken neck(bike crash) 4 years ago, a left wrist that is in need of a total joint replacement, a right shoulder that is in need of a total joint replacement, knees that are strapped when I am riding and walking since I can not run, the effects that ZERO testosterone has on a 65yo's body, effects of a poorly functioning 1/2 of a thyroid even with meds., anemia and a desire to not have my problems prevent me from getting the most from this body.

I completed the 2014 Ironman Florida 112 mile bike section non stop. Due to the pains and the not yet diagnosed prostate cancer at that time, I could not stay in the aero position as much as I had wished for but still managed a bike time better than 55% of the field, not too bad since 95+% of the field were younger.

I do my best to hold the hoods or pads for as long as possible on a group ride and feel that I am very fortunate in that the local groups I ride with acknowledge my issues and are OK with me having to go to the aero bars even when within the paceline. They know me and feel comfortable following me. BTW, I am not the only rider on the aero bars.

When riding with other groups, I abide with their ways.

At least aero bars keep them from grabbing a handful of disc brakes.

Should be less sketchy if they show up to your group ride with both.
