Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Colnago Master DI2 Project

Hi all.

I had a question for all you guys... I have spare Ultegra Di2 kit that I'm thinking of mating to a Colnago Master ('12). I can go external, but I think it would kill the lines of the bike (and it's a white frame). So, the question is.. would you drill the frame? I think it should be okay to do so since it's steel and not carbon, but is it sacrilegious to do so?

I would not drill a Colnago frame. But, that's just me.

go external first, ride it for awhile and then revisit the question.

Is that a known problem with the SRAM? It would be funny to go on a ride and open all the garage doors on my route. I may do that just for the fun factor.

source?

reason I ask is that SRAM has a patent for wireless shift technology which works on a 2.4GHz spread spectrum, AES encryption, etc, etc. Most garage doors standardize in the 300-400MHz range and utilize their own suite of security features. vastly different technologies to the point that your proposed situation of garage door openers interfering, much less actuating, is impossible.

so either SRAM has abandoned the system they have patented for a vastly inferior design, or you're blowing smoke.

google search for SRAM, wireless, and anything related to garage doors only bring up another post on this forum by you. odd.

I heard from a good source that Campagnolo won't release their wireless system because it accidentally brought down a satellite.

Use an emoticon. Folks need to know you are smarter than those comments indicate.

I advocate going with the SRAM. But to be fair, if Colnago is willing to drill their frames for DI2, why shouldn't we be willing?

He might have just made all that up. Like the old saying "if you can't dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with bs"

My OCD wouldn't let me put anything but Campy on a Colnago, especially a steel one. I don't judge others though, I know I'm the one with hangups.

You could look at it another way. All the Italian frames are dreaming of being built with Shimano or SRAM. Instead all the Luddites keep forcing Campy on them in the name of tradition. Lighten up and give your frame what it really wants. That Colnago frame is chanting, "Don't disgrace me, Dura-Ace me!" Who are you to impose your will on it?

All steel rusts. What's a couple more drilled holes.

You have a long wait then. It won't be available for sale to the public until Fall 2016

yeah, saw that too. probably run it wired di2 for now, then build it out wireless. There's always white electrical tape. Can also run it mechanical until then.

Totally understand, but I'm so deep in shimano stuff, wheels, cassettes, etc, that I can't make the switch to campy
