Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

He is still around but lately only pops in once a month or so. He must be busy, what with all the bikes, new corvette, and guitar/music it sounds like he has a full life. Plus I think he may be away for a couple weeks in Greece.

Are you talking forum Freds or cycling Freds?

Some are much more awesome on the internet than IRL.

I'll take one Fred of good character over a "quality" rider who is rude and condescending any day. If you can't be respectful and supportive of other riders, then you are dead to me. Have a good day, sir.

When did you find time to ask everyone?

Seven billion people and 6000 + languages must have taken you a while.

I was told I don't need to use the lock rings. I could just push down on the tire with my thumb.

I asked the provider of this unsolicited advice how advanced was the osteoarthritis in his thumb?

Still I'm doing my part by wearing sleeveless jerseys.

True; however, I don't see the two categories as mutually exclusive. One can be one, or the other, or both if using BSYNC's definition of Fred (illustration below).

There were more Freds when I started riding in the 80's. It got even worse in the early 90's. We're talking fanny packs, huge helmet mirrors, sleeveless jerseys, pink helmet covers, dual bottle cages on the saddle, ect. Today there's more wannabe pro racing posers than anything else. At least back then everyone had a reasonable bar drop.

+10 Though this is not a horrible community. There are lots of good people here including some of my favorite Freds. Pro on a Dogma or newbie clyde on a Schwinn hybrid, doesn't matter to me. I'm all about how you treat other people not how "cool" you are (or think you are).

Is there anyone else who has added so many turns-of-phrase to the BF lexicon? A previous thread captures the greatness that once was. Has it returned? Has it never really left?
