Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Waving experiment on the mup today...

I decided to wave at no one. Even if they waved at me I looked ahead and focused on my pace. I didn't worry about if I waved and they didn't wave back, I didn't care if I waved and they nodded. I didn't try to determine if they were likely to wave upon approaching them.

It was great. I had such a better experience. In the future, I will not wave unless I know or recognize you.

All you serial wavers, try not waving. It frees up so many personal resources. I'm actually blown away at how much nicer my commute was today.

I know it sounds crass, but no eye contact, no nod, no wave equals no stress.

I walk a nature preserve regularly and lots of folks make eye contact walking int he opposite direction but say nothing. The last time I was there I wound up saying hello to everyone. It's funny tho cuz pretty much everyone makes eye contact some even smile but the last time absolutely no one said hello. The area gets lots of foreign visitors cuz it's on Concord, so maybe they don't know we Americans are so friendly. But the time duration that we face and see ea other approaching is much longer than on bikes. With bikes we wiz by ea other, right? Whatever, maybe next time I'll just smile.

How did that experiment go where you weren't going to start a thread for a few days?

I think I'll try that. Maybe next time I might even snarl a little bit just to see what happens. Or perhaps throw a little Blue Steel their way!

To 'look ahead and focus on your pace' while riding on the MUP is a good start. Next up: retrieving, drinking from, and replacing your water bottle while 'looking ahead and focussing on your pace' without going over the centre line, snarling a dog leash, or knocking a three-year old off her trike.

Once you have mastered these skills, you are ready to enter a Category 6 'race'.

You must be an extremely lonely person and a total loser.
