Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

+1. They are also a discount FedEx shipping service. Used them twice in the last two years to ship from the east coat out west ad back. (MT and SD). Promise of four-day shipping was kept except for one return when major storms caused flooding and a two-day delay. That would have happened even if I had shipped via FedEx myself.

Playing around the shipbikes web site I requested a rate using the same origin-destination pair that I used for my shipping to South Dakota in June. Nearly all other information (dimensions, weight and drop off as opposed to pick up) was the same as well. The only thing different was the insurance amount. I selected $1,000. Bikeflights allows you to pick any amount you want. The next level up with Shipbikes was $2,000. I got a rate quote of $49.75 for four-day shipping. I paid $46 through bikeflights with $1,400 of insurance coverage. However, I got a discount for being a returning customer. IIRC, the discount was 10%. Factoring in the difference in insurance, it seems the two services are competitively priced.

Sounds like they negotiated a volume discount with Fed Ex and then pass part of the savings on to the consumer.

Smart...

That's exactly what they did. One thing I like about bikeflights is that its web site has the dimensions of several popular brands of bike boxes in a drop down menu. They also have great customer service. They have answered my emails within 20 minutes or less.
