Gonna buy a synapse, but need some advice first...

I've decided I'm getting a Cannondale synapse (105), but I have a few questions first:

    1. I hate the 2015 color schemes. Black on black or at best, black on green on black. I love this one on the 2016 version:
https://i.imgur.com/dr5jvcj.jpg. Now that it's the end of the 2015 model year, the shop will be blowing out the 2015 models... I think this is usually around 20% off, and from the retail prices at the shop might end up around an actual 10% from their usual price. So would you pony up the money to have a better paint scheme, assuming that is the only other difference to be found?

    2. I know the 2016 models are floating around at this point. However, I can't find any official information on them from Cannondale. Does anyone know enough to confirm that other than paint schemes there aren't any differences between the 2015 and 2016 models (non hi-mod)?

    3. What the best way to haggle the LBS down in price?

Simply talk to the store about it. The worst thing that they can do is say no.
We can't tell you how to spend your money we do not know your budget. If you can afford to pony up the extra money for the 2016 than I think that is a better bet for you. It stinks when you buy a bike that your really did not want. It will leave you wanting, and that is a bad feeling. If the extra money is out of your budget than it is an easy decision and you just have to live with it.
I am not a Cannondale fan but that new one with the green is beautiful so I can see why you want it.

Black goes with everything. It's always the safe option. I wouldn't pay more for paint unless it was bright red. I'd pay more for red.

Pretty much agree with everything. To answer your 3rd question, tell them you will be paying with cash. When the 2014 CAAD10's first arrived, I was able to knock off a couple hundred dollars just by offering to pay in all cash.

Why on earth would a business do that? I get that there are credit card processing fees, so let's go crazy and assume it's 2%. 2% of $3,000 is a mere $60, not "hundreds"

I'm not disputing your story, just disputing that all-cash is the magic answer.

You are unlikely to get a discount if you don't ask though, so there's that.

Don't be pushy. Just ask if they can work with you on the price a little bit or if the price is totally firm.

Are there other things that you need? That's sometimes a little easier from a shop to include. Basic fitting, tune-up, a couple bottles/cages and maybe some pedals at or near their cost.

    And another one:

    4. It's a given "it's easier to ask for forgiveness than permission" from the wife. But what if she's already said no because you forgot about the whole forgiveness thing?

There are multiple reasons why a small business will take the cash and offer a discount for it. First, you nailed it with the processing fee. However, you are not correct when it comes to the 2%. Most small businesses pay closer to 4%, especially if they truly understand the system. There are transaction fees, internet fees and other fees involved. Plus, if there are points attached to a card it makes the percentage of fees go up.
I am not condoning this but whatever they receive in cash is probably not being declared, thus it is avoiding income tax and possibly sales tax. Again, I am not saying that this is what somebody should do but it is a possibility.

I'm pretty sure the 2016's are on the dealers website now. Maybe you can go to a shop and they'll let you see them?

Colour is a very personal thing but I also thought the 2015 model 105 Synapses looked awful. I therefore recommend that you do as I did and stump up for the (IMHO) very lovely light blue 2015 Ultegra version. If you can find one in your size, they are now available for 1700 (from 2000) and it's a really nice bit of kit, albeit maybe a bit more than you want to pay. On the haggling front, you might be lucky and squeeze a bit more out of the deal, particularly if paying cash, but you might have a bit more luck in getting some accessories thrown into the deal. Be nice and friendly and ask them what else they can do on the price - they can only say know but most would be reluctant to see a potential customer walk away empty handed.

A few 2014's had a very similar paint scheme to the 2016 that you like. I think the '4' (Rival) and the '6' (mostly 5700 w/Tiagra brakes).

The LBS usually does a standard 10% discount on any accessories when you buy a bike. That may come in handy on something like the garmin 520 I've been wanting (as it's impossible to find discounts on that otherwise)... but I doubt I'll get much out of them other than any discount I can get on the bike itself.

That makes sense. If the bike is going to get you into some serious hot water with your bride, you might as well throw in a new garmin. Maybe a lap dance or two at the local gentlemen's club while you are at it? Sleeping on the couch helps develop character...

Hmmm. Just in the last few months I've started to see "Cash Only" signs pop up here and there in small stores around here. I'm not talking a large number, but I think it's spreading. I haven't seen signs like these in a very long time.

I wonder if this is going to become common as businesses rebel against high credit fees and having their databases hacked, etc?

This from a guy who almost never has a dime on him since I got a debit card. :-)

Nothing wrong with black. But all points are valid in the thread. Try to pay cash if you can and they should knock it down a bit. Just get the bike that you will be happy with because if not you will regret it each time you go ride it.

Buy the bike that speaks to you. You will downplay the need to N+1 for a lot longer period of time. It's Money saved from that way of looking at it. I spent more than my original budget, and got what I wanted. Now, three years later I still can't believe I own the thing.

For an extra few hundred bucks get the color you want. But I literally just spent 1500 bucks more for the color I wanted so I'm biased.

    Where are you located?

(Folks might be able to point you to a place that might have leftovers down to even 2013 on the floor and perhaps near you)

A couple LBS's here just started posting about model year closeouts.

Also.......if you haven't seen this one in person, I think this looks killer in person........
