Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

It is shaped like a V. You turn it upside down. One leg has a notch in its end that you press onto the top of the rim across from the unseated section of tire. Then you straddle the tool over the rim and reach the other leg across the tire. The other leg has a hook on its end that you grab the tire bead with. You bend the tool backwards and pull the tire bead over the rim edge. You don't do this until you have a but about 6 inches of the tire mounted. Questions?

Now that is taking attention to detail to extreme... the bike stand is the same colour as the tandem, and that is not a common colour. I like it! Do you have matching bike repair stands for your other bikes?

We have an electric blue Santana Arriva. What model is yours? And is that a post-purchase disc brake set-up, or is it as fitted by the factory? I ask, because I am slowly post-fitting a disc rear brake, but that mount Santana provides seems to be bit problematic for me.

None really, but I used the wide Schwable plastic tyre levers to do a similar thing. The hook on the end is quite shallow to avoid snagging the inner tube, and the width gives good purchase on the bead, plus they are quite strong. I am not sure a bead jack would do a much better job, for me.

Where's Unfiltered Dregs to tell us that pinching tubes is a bygone issue with tubeless tyres.

Only advantages might be the VAR tool never gets under the bead except for that little hooked end. Almost impossible to damage the tube. And the leverage might be greater.

The matching stand is by accident. It's the Ultimate Pro Elite before the company changed hands and it's a little beefier than many of their current offerings.

The tandem is a 2003 Santana Sovereign and was made for 250 mm Winzip brake in the rear.

This will be the last tour for this tandem which has been all over the U.S. And on tours in Spain, Portugal, Croatia, Serbia, Montenegro and a couple I forget.

We have a Co-Motion Supremo on order and should be here any day.

Regarding the VAR, I might have a brand new one in a package. I'll check when I get home from our tour and maybe have an Addiction contest for it.

Heal well, @Rowan! Listen to the Doctor. If @Machka want to go ride the Bike Friday, let her. You can catch up on some of those old Indy 500's you've been so meaning to watch.

Day one was interesting...The wife insisted that we didn't need to buy sleeping bags and brought blankets...We were suitably chilled the first evening. She woke me at 3am wearing all her clothes for the week at once...I treasure these moments, where I'm deemed categorically right across the boards...Nevertheless, chilled all night and chilly morning start turned into a tendon flare up in my left knee. Not fun. NSAIDS + Ice packs took care of everything by day three... I rode through it, just didn't get on it again until about the second half of the day 3 ride when I said, "**** it." These 50 photos are what's left after I culled 150 out of the total set. I have no idea what I'm doing with a camera. I have the basics down but...

Good stuff @UnfilteredDregs.

The western part of your tour was in @RollCNY and @rjones28 territory.
