Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

A close up of the 3d printed part. The knob loosens it so I can move the fork position quickly and clamp it down. It could be a little better... but it works.

I need to cut up some of the bracket I got to clear the cranks and redo the delrin piece where the bottom bracket rests. It's a little wide.

Very cool. How sturdy are you able to make the printed items? Are there varying grades of plastic available/usable? Do they come out of the printer that clean or is there quite a bit of sanding work necessary?

All questions that I have thought about for some time. Especially as the medical profession is now walking about 3D printing of various body parts.

Amen to running as the stupidest thing extant. All the sudden I have old man back problems, cyst in my lower back spine area causing nerve impingement. I'm blaming the fact that I started running again.

I saw a 3D printed tablet case that had a test strip reader incorporated into the top. It's being used to determine toxin levels in stored grains and nuts in Africa. Amazing stuff. Under $10 to make.

....and unless I'm mistaken, I think that I've seen some at least one machine that printed out in Ti. That's some bridging of the gap between techies and retrofarts, right there.

There is a TON of variation in 3D printing. The one we have at work is for very small scale stuff and is actually quite a bit older compared to the current crop of 3d printers. It's a makerbot2, and I think they are on their 5th generation or some such now. We use it because we manufacture remote operators for big, nasty, industrial circuit breakers and sometimes we have a part that can't be easily machined in our shop. We can have a vendor make it for us, but it gets expensive to pay them to run a water-jet machine for a single intricate part, so if we have something tricky, it's easiest to 3d print it for a test fit.

When I drew up the part for the stand, I specifically made it so that it wouldn't have to put down any filler support material, because I don't like the way our machine does it and it does require some extra prep work. This one I just took out of the machine and bolted it together. You can't really see it in the picture, but on the side opposite of the knob, I was able to put a hex profile in it so I could just drop in a nut so the knob was the only thing that had to be turned to tighten and loosen it.

In terms of strength, it's probably *just* strong enough. In the picture where you saw the machine working, you could see the outer layer and the honeycomb fill. I set it to 2 shells (the outer layers) and 10% fill, mainly because I didn't want to waste a lot of plastic overbuilding it or in case it didn't work.

This is a regular PLA type filament, but there are other filaments where you can print, say, a watch band and it's a rubbery, flexible type material. On the newer makerbots, you can do a dual filament part for different colors, but I don't know if different materials would print well together. Probably depends on the material.

So yeah, I think I've talked enough.

If you want a grapey tasting wine, try a bottle of Oak Knoll Niagara American. It's pretty much grape juice that gives you a buzz. Pretty cheap, too:

I have some lower back nerve impingement. I've been blaming it on riding bikes, though

Saving up for a full suspension bike offa craigslist after we get a decent tandem.

You're probably just too young to have burned a sufficient number of taste buds. As those burn out, it takes hyper-bitter, hyper-astringent, hyper-whatever to even make a dent...

I noticed that lately the Saturn's start-up feels sluggish. I went to "Advance Auto" and they tested the battery. Their gizmo said it has 150 CCA and it's supposed to have 525. I suppose that explains why it is not starting up quite so easily. Of course the current battery, though not original, is about 12 years old so I would like to think I got my money's worth from it. New battery installed, let's see if the new one lasts 12 years...

lately mostly around SI because i wake up for my ride alarm and just go back to sleep. but when i go on longer rides its usually up 9w somewhere while trying to stay off 9w itself as much as possible, cuz i like dirt and gravel roads

my other favorite area to ride (but requires a drive) is Hunterdon, NJ (not sure if you can actually see that or not)

generally speaking rain isnt anything different except you see less, have to not take corners at 30mph, and you have to think about your phone surviving the journey

the part that sucks is all the water and garbage that gets thrown back at you from the bike, which is the only reason to have full fenders

Yes running is stupid. The issue for me is that my schedule sucks and I can only get in 2 or at most 3 rides/week and I am an endorphin/exercise addict. My schedule does allow for 3 or 4 quick runs/week in addition to my bike rides. For example, this morning I had about 1 hour of "free" time. That allowed me to run for 5 miles (at a leisurely 9:30 per mile pace) plus warmdown and shower etc., there is NO WAY 1 hour is enough time for ride prep and ride. Does not compute. So I fear I will continue to run 3-4 times/week in spite of the stupidity.
