Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I put a road wheel (MA2 laced to a 1999-ish LX hub) on the tandem last night and we put 4 miles on it.

Nice and fast but I'm scared we'll destroy that rim before long. The little lady is loath to stand up ever, so if I nail a pothole the rear wheel is gonna have at least a little bit of weight on it. I only have one dual-pivot brake, so we might die on a descent, too.

I wouldn't worry about the wheel but that single brake would worry me a lot.

It just means that you are at an advanced stage in life where your priorities are... different. My wife's (former lifeguard) first reaction would probably be, "Mixing alcohol and water is a bad idea!" She's heard too much about people that get drunk near water with tragic results.

In other news: I couldn't even ride my brand new bike today. The rear shifting is out of whack and I CAN NOT get it to work sufficiently. It's driving me absolutely insane. And this is from someone who worked on bikes for a living and did quite well. I've been able to make walmart bikes shift better than this one. The RD gave me zero issues on the CAADX build, but just won't work right. Front shifting is perfect.

I think I might take it to a shop in town (owned by people who used to work for the shop I work for) just to put a der. hanger tool on it tonight. I'm that desperate. If that doesn't work, I think I'm going to use to full housing routing option, just to eliminate the possibility of any kinks, etc.

I wonder if I should take a poll to find out if I am in the extreme minority since I unclip inwards not outwards.

I have had problems in the past when intentionally crossing cables under the down tube by actually twisting them together by mistake. That makes for some pretty poor shifting, let me tell you.

I've done that before on a Scott frame at the shop. I could tell right away what the problem was, but it didn't occur to me that it could have happened on this frame... I came from the factory with those nifty plastic cable guides so you didn't have to fish around for a cable. Perhaps they got crossed when they put them in the frame and I didn't even check? Could be... I assume they got it right, but you know how that can go.

It did seem to shift slightly different depending on which front ring it was on...

It's pretty open at the bottom bracket, so I'll take a peek with a flashlight when I stop at home for lunch. I appreciate the input!

DAG it.

Also, cable seated correctly in all of the stops? (I know, but I had it happen on a bar swap the other day, so I had to ask)

That's all good, and cables are fully seated into the cable ends, etc. I always dry-shift the crap out of a freshly built bike before I actually tune it. I'm thinking Robert's suggestion that the internally routed cables may be crossed is a pretty high possibility the more I think about it. I'll have a chance to look at it in a few hours here.

It really sucks though when you have a new bike that rides like a dream and is just perfect in every way and the most basic function will not function...

There's always one in the crowd.

I declined to say it in the actual thread, but it's better here amongst loved ones.
