First time running in 6 months - thigh pain!
It seems like this happens to me every fall... First time I run in months, and the fronts of my thighs are killing me! Only made it 1/2 mile before everything got too tight, and I had to stop. And this was at an 11 minute mile pace...
Anyone else go thru this when transitioning from cycling to running for the season? What causes it, and how can I prevent it? It usually gets better after trying to do several runs, but I hate starting back up again.

First off, running is stupid.
My wife somehow just got the running bug and recruited me to go running with her. I'm not a runner, but being a cyclist with strong lungs and heart I can easily run faster and longer than my muscles will allow. I've learned this from previous ill advised attempts at running. The benefit of running with my wife is her untrained lungs and heart slow her down which keeps me from overworking my poor unused running muscles.
So, my advice is to run with your wife or girlfriend. If you do not have one than pay a working lady to go running with you.

There's no running versus cycling seasons for me, I do both all year round. The only thing that will truly help is to build up your running slowly again. You're essentially starting from scratch if you didn't run at all for months, so you gotta crawl before you walk and walk before you run, metaphorically speaking that is...

+3 - I'd actually be quite interested in triathlons if it weren't for the stupid running and dumb swimming. But I suppose I've never tried training with a working lady, maybe that's the ticket.

I think it just might give you the edge, and, it's almost certain to be less expensive than a personal trainer.

That certainly possible...but the ensuing divorce would burn through the savings.

Good idea - but then I'm still paying to ride with a bunch of people I don't really want to be around.

I'm not saying running is stupid. It's just that my time is valuable. Why should I do that when I can go down the street to a ready pool of day laborers who will work hard at it for less than minimum wage? It's basic economics 101.

As for why your quads are sore- it is because cycling has made them short and fat. Running causes them to stretch/elongate then shorten/contract. This cycle is what causes the soreness. It's even worse running downhill due to greater elongation and more weight at impact. So your quads will get sore until they are lengthened enough for your stride and pace.

+1 on the running is stupid. I put 2000 miles on my bike this season so far and the only time my degenerative disk started to hurt me was after I got the stupid notion to run one day. That was my last day of running. It's not worth it. HS swimmer and becoming a stronger cyclist but running just sucks and I'm not built for it. So much for triathlons.

I have one serious suggestion, until you get into full running shape: Do a run/walk regimen. Run 2 minutes, walk 1, and repeat for the entire "run." As you build up those quads, increase the running time before taking that walk break. Within a few weeks you should be able to run without a walk break....and without pain.
