Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

When your 20 yr. old daughter with Down syndrome decides that a daddy daughter indoor triathlon would be cool, you run. I pulled a hamstring on the treadmill getting ready, and aggravated it in the event.

Now, I do an 8 to 12 mile run once a week, just in case. It has even improved my biking, but it's still stupid.

Not to start a flame war but cycling is a lousy muscle workout -- one repetitive no impact motion closed-cycle over and over. I think you have to mix it up, with some running, if you want real athletic perfromance. As a demonstration, try an Insanity or P90x work-out or a 90 minute yoga class or trail running...your cycling "fitness" will rather dramatically be put to the test.

Perhaps next year keep running year round. Just do something like 2 miles once a week. Then you won't have this type of transition period (but still start slow when you switch to mainly running).
