Your Weekend Ride Reports -- October 3/4

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Your Weekend Ride Reports -- October 3/4

Tell us about your cycling adventures this weekend! Where did you ride, what was the route like, the weather, the people you rode with?

Down here, it is Grand Final weekend and DST weekend. A big weekend for us.

It's also a rather strange weekend for weather. We've been so cold and miserable for so long ... coldest winter since 1966 and not much in the way of a summer back in Dec/Jan/Feb. And then, all of a sudden this weekend there was a huge wind which blew in summer.

We had a high of 13 last Tuesday and were really pleased with 18 on Thursday ... and then, out of the blue, we had a high of 29 today!

So amid winds gusting to 80 km/h, and an unusual 29 degree temperature, we cycled 27.3 km on the cycleway.

I rode my titanium road bicycle, Rowan rode his fixie.

former RI resident Becca F riding for Amy D foundation this year.

Men getting ready to go... Ben Berden snapped his chain off the start... too much Belgian power.

I cycled Friday, since i'm working this weekend. Drove with the MTB on the car roof to my favourite spot, the Tegernsee. Awesome climbs, awesome roads, awesome views, brutal climbs.
It was a perfect day at 15 degrees C and sunshine in abundance. Also found an open Almhuette and had a Kaiserschmarrn. Yum.

Got a flu shot Thursday and must be a little run down. Got in almost 30 miles but it was more work than I expected. Could not get out of a funk most of the ride. Did not feel bad just no mojo. Still any time on the bike is good and I am glad I got out. See how Sunday goes.

Sunday -- nice day today with a high of 22C and almost calm winds.

We did a casual 21.3 km ride along the foreshore under bright sunny skies.

Did my first metric century as one of the shorter routes for the charity event North Jefferson Century benefitting CDKL5 neurological disorder research.

It was chilly, rainy, windy, my knee was injured from when I overdid a run in trail running shoes earlier in the week, and I wasn't dressed adequately for it... but I still had fun. Or at least that's my story and I a sticking to it.

Lots of rain here in SC... a little worn out from a pretty tough Tues - Fri. Not sure about taking another rest day today, or trainer for a Z2/3 2-hr effort.

No rides were planned for the weekend, and yesterday was sort of dreary, so chores got done instead - I really needed a haircut.
This morning I got up thinking I might drive up to the Catskills to ride around up there, but couldn't figure out where to start - where to park and all. Fortunately, I saw a note that the usual gang was going to ride today after all. The forecast hadn't looked very promising, but it turned out to be a gorgeous day. A little breezy, but nothing to struggle against. Nice and sunny and crisp. We didn't go very far, so I rode all the way back to the shop, where I usually turn off early. Hung out at the shop for a while, and on the return home I missed a turn and wound up adding a couple of extra miles looping through a subdivision that only has two odd connections to main roads.

It was a perfect day for a bike ride. My bike has it's favorite route, but I managed to take a bit of side detours. There were a lot of other folks out cycling I enjoy. It's quite a pretty ride for the most part. It seems wrong to put the bike in the car and drive it someplace, so I endure the city streets. My reward for a longer ride was pasta with oil and garlic for dinner! I'm not liking the shorter days.

I think summer finally came to an end this weekend. However, the weather was a mixed bag. It got down into the low 70's and high 60's, but unexpected rain showed up. Anyways...Saturday I went to Upper Tampa Bay trail for 40 miles. It did feel like a typical October Fall in FL day. Patchy clouds, low temps, off and on light rain and a swirly wind. Sunday I thought I would do a typical loop around S. Tampa. There was a really impressive double rainbow along Bayshore. People were stopping their cars to take pictures. Unfortunately, rainbows usually mean moisture in the air. I left my house expecting I would be caught in some rain, but it started much earlier and was heavier than I was hoping for. I cut my ride a bit shorter than normal after my shoes and socks got too soaked. I only got in 30 miles.

The rainbows...

Did a 40 mile loop along the Merrimack River to Plum Island. Brutal headwind going to the island, nice tail wind for the ride home. Cool, but a really nice ride.

WOW these are long distances I see here.

I rode just 16 miles around a local golf course. Just starting. 19.1 mph. I'm still adjusting my new bike and I think I need to move the seat forward a bit.

Nothing special. Rode across the bridge, it's good sized bridge. Some jogger looked like he wanted a race. I was just going slow behind him waiting for a chance to pass. Got him on the downhill. Snuck up on another lady. I did put my bell on recently. She was walking casually. It was a trail so waiting for it to open a little didn't want to be like get out of my way so I'm going real slow behind them for a few minutes then out of nowhere she jumps and realizes I've been there the whole time. Bike must be pretty quiet as i was close behind them for a little ways.

It is fun. Talked to 4-5 of the pro women before their race. wished them good luck and stuff. Looked for some of the usual guys that i've met before but they were hiding in their tent/vans staying warm before they warmed up during the womens race. Always super approachable and fun to talk to about conditions and stuff.

they come to 2 parks near me every year so it is easy to watch. They have a similar course every year so you know where good spots to watch are and you can wander around every few laps to see different spots. Saturday's race was a new course setup so it took a few laps to figure out where stuff was.

I watched a mtn bike race in the middle of winter in Manitoba that was something like that ... good fun.

That's a great start.

Fitting a bike to you, and vice-versa is a dynamic thing. Don't be afraid to make incremental adjustments. Mark the original position in case the new one doesn't work. And make one adjustment at a time, not several, such as seat and bar height.

I'm not hard core like many of you, but I passed a big (for me) milestone this weekend. I did a 23-miler that put me over 1k miles for the year (71k+ of elevation gain)! I'm pretty proud of it, and wanted to share. I didn't ride this year until March, because I'm allergic to cold.

The year isn't over yet! Now I just have to not wimp out when the cold weather hits. Easier said than done!

When I retired a couple of years ago, I moved to an area that was more bike-friendly and began commuting to my retirement job down the bike path. I explored the bike paths, but have been getting increasingly dissatisfied with the whole concept of "multiple use," which seems to be a way of saying, "sidewalk with bikes allowed as an irritant to mothers with strollers." So I've started exploring the byways around here, focusing in routes of up to thirty miles that I can explore without having to drive there. I got a bike GPS and enjoy planning my trips almost as much as taking them. I live in the Pioneer Valley, so I can chug up the side of the Berkshires if I'm feeling energetic or stay on the flat valley floor if I'm feeling lazy.

This weekend I rode a 30-mile flat loop along both sides of the Connecticut River, up to Sugarloaf Mountain and back home to Florence. The weather was cool and refreshing, the roads were mostly appropriate -- while some were completely lacking shoulders, they were rural enough to not present a problem for cars to just swing wide and pass. And the flatness was a real pleasure, making me feel like I was in a lot better shape than I really am. Just to drive that point home, I went to a farm store the next day, which is only about a 15 mile round-trip, but is up into the foothills a bit. While it didn't exactly wipe me out, it did remind me that I've still got a ways to go to get back in shape. But, all-in-all, it was a lovely weekend.
