Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Need Wheel Advice

Which is the better wheelset to put on my primary bike (Specialized Roubaix Pro): A 10-yr. old but very lightly used set of Mavic Krysirium Elites, or a new set of Fulcrum Racing 5s? I now own both whelkisets, so issues of cost or price don't matter. The set not chosen will go on my backup bike, a Specialized Sequoia Elite. But it's the Roubaix I'm most concerned about, since it's really the only bike I ride. All advice appreciated.

Doesn't really matter, but the Fulcrum 5s are probably better, especially if they are newer.

I would go with the Fulcrums.

If you already own both why not just put them on and see for yourself? If you were buying them I'd say go with the Fulcrums just because they're new.

The Fulcrum's score points for me because they use standard spoke nipples. Mavic's weird proprietary shi...stuff can only cause you headaches on the road.

I don't own either of those whelkisets. You own both of those whelkisets. Why are you asking the internet?

Good question; both sets feel OK on the road. That doesn't mean that they roll equally well, or will be as durable, etc. I was hoping for advice based on experience and understanding of design, and that's the kind of advice I've gotten!

I HEAVY (normally 240) and found my Fulcrum wheels to be flexy, when cornering. I have several sets of Vuelta Corsa HD's that I enjoy but wanted something lighter. I've tried the Corsa Lites and only get about 1600 miles before a spoke breaks and rear hubs are toast. I went with the Mavic Cosmic Elites because they were CHEAP from my LBS. I really did not like them the first few hundred miles as they took some time for the bearings to "free up." Felt like I was dragging an anchor around behind me. These also have the flat spokes and probably took 800 miles before they set in and didn't need trued after every ride (I'm picky about wheels being true.)

Several people I ride with run the
Krysirium Elites with great success. In fact that's what I had decided on until I found such a great deal on the Comic's because they hold up so well for everyone who rides them around here. Everyone complains about the stiff bearings at first though.
