Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Trainer Road and Sufferfest

My cycling performance has really deteriorated since I moved from California to Texas. However, I just started riding with a guy from my work and I am feeling really out of shape. So, I just ordered a Trainer Road subscription and am looking for videos. From Sufferfest I can buy individual videos or a video training program. Has anyone here found the training programs a better option than buying individual videos?

By the way, has Trainer Road made much of a difference in your cycling performance?

I'll let others leave their opinions, but here is a great article on the various video sources TR supports and how to integrate them into the workouts: Using Videos with TrainerRoad

Also, here's a good article on the various training plans already set up and ready to go within TR that you can do with any entertainment source you choose: Picking the Right Training Plan

Thanks, this helps. I did my first workout yesterday with TR and Sufferfest. It took a lot of the boredom out of riding in doors and I got a good workout too.

Why do you ride indoors on a trainer? Austin has a nice year round climate. Even when it's dark, cycling with lights is much better than being indoors

It is dark when I leave for work and almost dark when I get home. The roads near me I consider to be dangerous which means I would need to put my bike in my car and drive somewhere. This is what I do on the weekends. I drive to where the best riding is but during the week, I think my best option is on the trainer.

The road I have to take if I were to ride where I live is now having shoulders added. This will mean that I can ride this road during the day light but I wouldn't ride it at night unless I want to be a statistic.

There is no way to reach my house without taking this road:

It will be great once the shoulders are in.

Got you. Not a good place to ride. I personally just bought three Sufferfest videos and use them. As far as training, I don't stay in the same shape as riding on the roads primarily from the lack of time I'm willing to put in on the trainer.

If you are riding Hamilton Pool you are braver than I am. I have seen very few people riding it and there is always a long string of pissed off drivers behind the cyclist.

I live in SoCal and ride indoor 90% of the time. Like the OP, I'm also time constrained and get the most bang for my buck in the garage. I live in a great place (5 minutes from base of Lytle Creek) but I'ts often dart when I leave work and dark when I get home.

TR is a great tool, and you could also check out zwift.com
