New to road cycling. Necessary gear?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I got a $20 raincoat on sale a Performance Bike. I usually shop either there or Nashbar.com---you can basically buy the same gear there that you can pay three or four times as much for if you get a brand name.

If yo can afford a fat bike just to commute and are up for winter riding, have at it. I have never ridden one but i have tried winter riding---the issue isn't snow, it's ice. If you hit ice and don't have studded tires ....

All you really need is a good floor pump, and to take that bike to a proper shop for a tune up and to make sure the bearings are greased. And a quality U Lock if you are gonna be commuting on it

Unfortunately Ohio weather isn't the best in fall and winter. I will need to buy some type of rain coat, do you guys have any recommendations? I also considered buying a fat tire bike for the snow days but I am not sure if it is worth the investment

Colorado has it's share of not all that cycling friendly winter weather as well. I bought a Townie 21d last fall and it well worth it served quite nicely. Rode on New Year's day for the first time ever this year.

I'm surprised it's lasted this long; most BSO's like yours fall to pieces within about 300 miles. Of course, as a campus bike, it's probably perfect-it weighs a ton and isn't worth much, so the thieves pass on it and steal something more valuable...
