High-end parts on low-end frame?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I hope they were just your friends giving you a hard time, which is expected.

I did the same thing with an old, low-end Bianchi back in about '98. Converted it from 7 speed with down tube shifters to 9 speed ultegra, which made it fun to ride for another 7 or 8 years. You can always move the components to a new frame if you get the itch.

Quite a change from the usual---low-end rider on a high-end bike.

(j/k--I am a low-low, myself. Not putting on airs or anything.)

I have another option for you, if you can ride in a lower position this can bring you over to the threadless realm without having to buy a new fork

I have an old Bianchi frame built with Cromor, which to the steel-is-real police is strictly low to mid grade, that has somehow acquired, over the last couple of years, a bunch Veloce 10sp parts. Again, keeps with the low to mid theme. Is it worth it? Of course. Rides good. And tinkering with bikes is also good fun.

In short, you done good.

People worry WAY too much about what other people do. It's your bike and your $. Enjoy your new parts on your old favorite.

If he'd spent $1200 on a new bike he'd have Tiagra and off-brand clunker wheels. Most cyclists would consider the 2nd tier group on any of the big 3 (Ultegra, Chorus) to be "high end"-ish at the very least.

You're not a fool for doing this if you like the frame, and it fits you well.

But your approach was not necessarily the most cost effective. Given how cheap suppliers of whole bikes can buy groupsets, you could have gotten a brand new complete bike for what you put in this one.

For a few dollars more you could have had a new CF Bikes Direct bike with Rival.

You ended up with what you like and wanted, which is fine, just not the most economical answer.

Did the same thing to my 86 super sport recently. Got the frame for $30, loved how it rode but it didn't fit in my collection very well as a classic bike since I have a vintage bike and don't need two, but I couldn't ditch the frame, rides too nice. Through creative trades I got a threadless carbon fork and headset for another $30. I had all the other parts I needed. Next is a repaint. Unnecessary but the previous owners of this bike abused the finish.

It's now my favorite bike. A close second is my Soma Smoothie, I am really pissed that the Schwinn I already had rides better when set up the same way, and cost me $60 for the frame and fork instead of $400.

Don't ask me as I recently overhauled and upgraded a 2003 Raleigh M60 MTB. On paper/financially it made no sense at all, especially given that it's a low end MIC commodity frame.

However, if I didn't already have all the parts on hand I wouldn't have done it. I had purchased the parts years ago at clearance prices.
