Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Please don't take this the wrong way, the public service you have provided is entertainment for silly road cyclists.

A $600 price difference comes out to what price per pound?...let's see... 600 divided by 2.5 = $240 per pound.

hmmm...$240/lb saved if you go with Aluminum
...or $240/lb more if you go with CF.

That's pretty pricey! Sometimes I only pay about $12 per lb for sockeye salmon!

Good examples that show a further narrowing of the price difference between alloy and CF --e.g., ~$300 difference. No surprise I guess that Trek is a leader in bringing bike prices down. And, it also makes Felt's alloy Z85 look pretty reasonably priced at ~$400 cheaper than Trek's ALR 5.

I could be wrong - but I think for those examples, the price of the AL bikes are a couple of hundred dollars more than the comparable Felt bike, no?

What's the conversion rate between sockeye salmon and carbon fiber?

Well, let's see: Salmon swim well uphill (up-stream), but carbon fiber is lighter.
Plus, it's sort of tough to ride a fish.
Er...someone please help me with the math here

Salmon die after going up a hill, though. A bike generally survives to descend and climb again. Unless it asplodes while climbing, but then the shards probably kill the salmon before it gets to its destination, too.

Moral of the story: If someone on carbon goes off on a breakaway, let them go or risk shrapnel.

Let's take an unofficial poll:

Two bikes... same mfg., geo and components you can choose CF or alloy: same price.

What would you choose?

I would likely take CF...if it was a decent quality CF. That's for 2 reasons:
1) I don't have a CF bike, so it would be nice to have one;
2) It's probably lighter...lighter, but it's very nature, is faster.

Two pounds of aluminum will be slower than 908 grams of CF ... but a 2-lb salmon is too small to swim upstream.

But ... salmon meat is red, which is faster.

How fast is a salmon-colored steel bike? Is it real?

The valve stems cost another $600---they're carbon fiber.
