Shimano Claris?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Shimano Claris?

What is Claris? It's listed on Shimano's site being below Sora, but they had to put it somewhere. Has anyone ridden it? Is it awful or passable?

It's the latest version of 2300. If you search Google you can find some reviews on roadbikereview.com.

+1. Doesn't look too bad, actually. No thumb shifters.

Yeah, looks good, I think the shifters come in 2x8, so I may have an option there if my 1995 105 shifters ever crap out

Put together a Fuji Finest 1.0 with Claris triple, at the shop the other day.
It seemed to shift quite well on the stand, and it adjusted easily.
The shifters seemed to be very good for the price point of an entry level bike.

I bought a Trek 1.1 aluminum bike and it came with Claris. I've only ridden it a few times, but it doesn't feel as crisp as the 105 set on my other bike. There are little indicators on the top of the hoods that show you which gear you are in, which doesn't really seem that useful, but...

I'm happy with Claris for now, on an approx. $700 aluminum road bike, but I think I might upgrade in the future.

I replaced the downtube shifters on the wife's new(to her) bike with these. The nice part is each side can be ordered separately on line. Cheaper than ordering as a set. The reason is the left side being double or triple. As far as how they perform, they seemed to be good quality. But I am a vintage guy and run friction on all of my bikes. On the test ride after installing on the wife's bike here was my first thought:

"You have to hit this lever every time you want to move a gear? And you can only move 1 gear at a time? That sucks! I believe I will stay with friction."

So it's cheap and serviceable. Excellent.

I was researching this myself. Some person commented it's great. The only way it wouldn't is if they're not properly adjusted. Some interesting bikes with Shimano Claris: Norco Valence A4 (endurance type, double crankset, capable of 28mm tires, 32 hole rims), Trek CrossRip (cyclocross commuter, triple crankset, 32mm tires, 32 hole rims).

I'd prefer the triple crankset, sloping top tube and larger tires on the Trek CrossRip.

I just bought a Crossrip Comp that has Claris. Only a few rides in so I can't comment on durability, but overall it seems like a perfectly fine solution. I have another bike with a mix of 105 and Ultegra. As the poster above mentioned, it doesn't feel as crisp as the higher level stuff bit when I'm on the bike and riding it and enjoying it, it's absolutely fine.

I've done 6500 miles with them and they are excellent, though I don't shift too much given my flat terrain.

A huge bonus is they have trimming at the smallest and middle of the three chainring version.

I switched 5703 105 (3x10) for Claris STIs and Sora derailleurs - it works very well - shifts better, crispier than 105. Very happy. 8 speed cassettes and chains are cheaper than 10 speed stuff, so that's another big plus for me.

Well, you can go up and down all the way with indexed DT's as well. I never liked friction, even in the 80's once indexed came out.

I just replaced the cassette and chain on my 2014 Claris-equipped road bike a few weeks ago at about 3,000 miles. It was actually a SRAM cassette, but I replaced it with a Shimano. The groupset itself has required no repairs and just minor adjustments to date and if anything the bike shifts even better now than previously (although the large jumps between gearing is definitely noticeable compared to my 11 speed 105 bike). For an inexpensive training bike though, I've been very happy with it.
