A motheaten, shrunken old sweater as mid-layer, for riding in snow and sub-freezing weather like the badass I am.
Actually, I have a sweater like this, and it isn't moth-eaten, but it is favored for such use:
All wool, snug and warm.
It has sentimental value as well - from my days in the fleet.

I have a thing called a "Furnace Shirt" by Early Winters (a division of Sahalie). It's a thick polypropylene jersey that is astonishingly warm. When temps get down to the low 20s F that's my go-to cycling baselayer. I think they envisioned it would be used by arctic campers.

I actually use a lot of my cycling gear running... got into cycling first. But I have a pair of Asics pants that are wind resistant and pretty water resistant. Worn over bibs and leg warmers I have ridden in the snow at 30 degrees effectively. They were pretty cheap, and work great for running as well.

I wear regular womens fleece-lined tights from Marshall's over my shorts in winter. Sometimes 2 pair. Why? Because they are $5 a pair and look exactly the same from a distance as "real" cycling tights. Maybe they aren't quite as warm as windstopper tights, but then again they aren't $120 a pair either.
So that's my favorite.
But also: chemical toe and hand warmers, and glove liners, from the ski department of my local sporting goods store. Greek yogurt made into a smoothie as my protein-laden recovery drink rather than whey or similar protein powder. Also peanut powder as a protein source in recovery drinks- peanut powder, milk, hershey's syrup is pretty tasty high protein stuff.

My favorite non-cycling purchase lately is a battery operated warming scarf I found at Walgreens.

I tried this for my toes yesterday but had a hard time getting them to fit in my shoes and ended up wearing my running shoes. Not comfortable for riding. How do you do you get them in your shoes?

Thanks for this. Might need this trick for the upcoming break I'm about to get, as long as I can fight of this small cold before then.

For me, probably the inexpensive Champion wicking t-shirts that I get from Target. I usually buy when they are on sale for less than $10 each, and they work just as well as expensive "base layer" gear from fancier name brands. They are available in short sleeve, long sleeve and tank top, as well as compression fabric or regular. Long sleeves run about $5 more. I wear these t-shirts year-round under my jerseys or rain jacket.
I just got a UA long-sleeve wicking shirt at TJ Maxx over the weekend. And I have 2 UA, and 1 Asics that I wear on short rides all the time that I got at TJM. I do have one long sleeve jersey that I got on a clearance sale at Performance for $30. I use it on longer rides where I need to carry nutrition. So normally for rides over 20 miles. I also wore it between 60F and 70F. Now I have another long sleeve I can wear in that temperature range.

I tried on an Arcteryx Darter jacket at REI today. Windblock in the front, wicking fabric in the back, very long sleeves and torso. Would be perfect for training rides and was on the clearance rack. I might go back and get it.

Also try TJ Maxx. I get some name brand wicking t-shirts (e.g. Under Armor, Acics, Nike, etc.) for $7 - $20. Like you said, the long sleeve ones cost about $5 more. And they have all the types that you mentioned. For UA, they have compression, fitted, and loose. Now, they don't have them all the time, and they don't have all colors in all sizes, but what they do have is normally less expensive than you could get at a bigger name sports store.

I would post a warning not to let this thread derail into a "cycling specific stuff is a ripoff and all my "cycling" stuff isn't really cycling stuff" pissing contest, but I know that would be pointless since the person who will post that near exact sentence won't read beyond the thread title.
But for those of you paying attention, what do you have that works really great on the bike that you found somewhere other than nashbar or your local shop?
I'm reminded of this because when it hits freezing temps in the morning, my favorite gloves are these herrignbone wool with black leather palms and 3M Thinsulate lining that I got for 20 bucks at Target. I have foolishly bought cycling specific winter gloves even after this pair, but they are the first things I pull out when it gets really cold.

Galaxy Note 2 and Under Armour tops and bottoms.
I have successfully avoided the temptation to buy any Garmin computers by using the Note 2.
